Re: Extensor Action and left wrist cup

Great discussion Shootin .. tks for helping me out here..

He said he 'felt' like he used the right hand pushing on the left to 'pull' the club back rather than push it back with his left hand. As a 1PS'er trying this myself felt strange but it got the club to similar positions albeit with the right hand led takeaway (hitting motion as you describe) my right wrist felt way more cupped and my left wrist flatter and my left arm extended due to this extensor action idea. When I 'hit' from here with my right hand (feeling I got was like trying to slam the heel of my right hand onto the ball) I was hitting it well. As opposed to the chest led turn back I would use in the 1PS

As with you I found I could absolutely cork the irons with this hitting method but I was hooking the driver/woods

dont be fixated on the one plane two plane thing, all it really is is jut two patterns of swing with a catchy name, there are thousands of patters. if you want to try it with the woods, take a closed stance, square shoulders and club face pointing at target, this will get the hips out of it a little

Re: Extensor Action and left wrist cup

This past weekend I was watching the International and they did a super slow motion on Sergio's swing. His hips started to move slightly before his arms but what I watched closely was the start of the down-swing. His right elbow dropped vertically to his right hip. His right wrist was cupped to that point; then he turned into towards the ball. That part was so fast I could not see his release; even in slow motion. His right hand cupped position was about 90 degrees. Myself I can only get it to about 80 degrees. Is this something you are born with or can you do some stretching exercises to improve it? I have switched to the one plane swing and my game has improved a lot. I have noticed many pro's have now made the switch as well.

Funilly enough using this right hand hitters action last night I found that an open stance and closed shoulders was getting the job done ? This i *think* was the same setup Hogans used to offset his hook tendency?

there is more then one way to get the job done, hogan used a closed stance for driver but he wanted the shoulders slightly open I believe, then he opened his stance for wedges, according to his book

Re: Extensor Action and left wrist cup

When I went to watch celtic manor wales open a 30% of the pros I saw on the range were all working on this right wrist cup to start the backswing. I love the move, if you do this move correctly in the takeaway the rest of the backswing just falls into place.

Past 2 weeks I have used this move for chipping, and my chipping and pitching is as pretty pro at the moment!

Its such a simple and effective move and i think its becoming a very popular way of teaching the golf swing.

                Ricky

What were the pro's doing exactly? Just the first move back being a cup and then a turn? I find chipping like this easy too and also a great way to learn the abridged version of the full swing by hitting chips/half swings

Using the right hand, cup the right wrist, flatten the left and extend the left arm. Then from there simply roll/push off the instep of the right foot, turning the lower right side to get hip rotation through the ball. Even in a half swing the ball comes off the club with real easy power

I was watching mainly Brett Rumford and Barry Lane doing this right wrist cup because they were in the same grouping and I got right behind them on a view tee's. Basically Brett Rumford was doing this and you could tell he was concentrating on doing it in his practice swing, also barry was. They would do the cup which would move the club like 1-2ft and then basically turn, but brett rumford was doing this move but also concentrating on folding his right elbow very early in his swing.

Tks Ricky. The way I 'feel' this move is that its my wrists bending that controls my pivot. So all I am doing is using my hands to bend my wrists around myself and that controls my body turn. There is no conscious lifting or wrist cock there. From there I can hit the ball hard with my right hand

Re: Extensor Action and left wrist cup

Just an update. Ive been working hard on this twistaway + extensor action movement and ive been playing my best golf ever, came in net under par the last 3 medals and driving the ball consistently much longer than before. Main problem I have now is over drawing the ball but this I think is something I need to go practice to learn how to better setup and control that shot

Been working with my pal on using a piece of string tied around my left elbow and the clubhead. At address it should be fairly taut but have a little slack. This is the 'radius'. From here I make that twistaway move and try to maintain the tautness in the string to the top. It feels like you are trying to get your hands as far from your head as possible and at the top you really feel the pull on your left shoulder socket. You cant sway else the string slackens and it seems to help me to do this move at a quicker tempo

Then on the way down do the same movement trying to keep the tautness in the string. I am using what Shooting called the hitting motion, right palm down and through but you need a little motion in the lower body to keep that string taut as you come down into impact. Maintaining the radius

                      Great stuff and so simple

                        hi shootin
yes hogan did close his stance for drives and had it wide open on wedges, he kept his left foot in same place and moved his right foot forward or back and kept ball in same posision with every shot, only his right foot moved.
been reading what you have been saying, am i right in thinking the player that start downswing with there hips are more swingers than hitters.
