Whoever said hybrids are easier to hit is wrong in my opinion, at least for me. I cant hit the hybrids or the fairway woods off the ground to save my life. I either top the ball or skip it across the ground with them

Now when I use my 6 or7i i hit them with good loft and about 180 for the 6i and 160is with the 7i. Occasionally I can get the 6 about 190-200.

My question is since i am a new player and bought a set of cheap clubs that DID NOT come with any irons longer than the 6, do you think I would be better able the hit a 3 or 4 Iron better than I can hit the hybrid.

Do people still use those long irons or has everyone gone to the hybrids.

Heres a question i need an answer too. I have a combo 4/5 Hybrid which I either top the ball or skip it across the ground about a 100 or so yards, and I have a 6i that I hit pretty consistent about 170+. why in the world do I hit the 6i better if the hybrids are "supposed" to be easier to hit.

Swing thru the ball not at it.

      Re: Hybrids

I recently purchased a Callaway Heavenwood #2 hybrid and ditched my 3 and 5 woods.

Lately, I've been lucky to hit my 4 and 3 irons constantly straight with a comfortable distance of 175 yds and 195 yds respectively. So I thought a #2 hybrid will be a good arsenal addition.

I took it to the driving range and started experimenting with it. At first I was topping the ball when the ball is on the ground. I used a fairwaywood type swing (or swinging thru).

Then I used the iron type swing, which is a decending blow and WOW! it just took off high and straight like a long iron shot. I was averaging 215 yds which is the same distance with my 3 wood.

Now my 3 and 5 woods are in the garage collecting dust.

My next club to purchase is the Callaway Heavenwood #1 hybrid to replace my 3 wood.

Good luck and keep it on the short grass.

        Re: Hybrids

I think Joeyg has it right. I have a #5 Heavenwood and can hit it out of the rough about 180 yds. I haven't successfully used it off the fairway yet and I think it is because I'm trying to sweep it like a wood (which also give me grief). Considering I normally hit a 5 iron about 150 yds, I'm optimistic that the hybrid will be useful as an alternate to woods.

New player and you can hit a 6i 180 yards?

thanks to this site it is more likely..... i have been playing on and off for about 1 year and i hit my 5 about 180, but not my 6, that is impressive, especially hitting your 6 190-200, bet your drives are in the +300's.

                Re: Hybrids

yeah, I hardly ever can hit the 6i 190. But I can consistently get it too 170-180. My 7i I use from about 150-170. Depending on the lie, wind, uphill down hill. All are factors for me. No I dont hit my driver 300+ I only hit that about 250-270. I lose alot of distance because of a bad fade. I am trying to fix it.

I think i need a different Hybrid. Mine are the top flights from target/ My buddy has a nike with a different degree and I can get that in the air and hit about 200 or so. its a 5 hybrid. I am thinking similar to a 4i

Keep in mind none of these shots are consistent. I would be in the 80's if they were. I have been playing for about 2-3 months and have worked hard on my game, I play about 2-3times per week. and go to the range every couple of weeks.

                  Re: Hybrids

my swing speed is consistently between 100-105 which is pretty normal for an amatuer. So the guy running the sim says. Ball speed with the driver is about 150-160mph

I find cheap HYBRIDS really arnt great! They feel like a brick when a ball comes off of the face!

Which is the sim measuring? Swing speed or ball speed?

Then I'd wager your SS is higher, unless you're pasting balls all over the middle of your face.

The average amatuer smash factor is somewhere between 1.3 and 1.4.

I have been struggling with my 5 iron/hybrid. I too, was trying to sweep the ball, as thought I was using a fairway wood. I always felt as thought, I were too tall for that club, and to swing it in that fashion.

It didn’t occur to me to try and hit the ball as thought the hybrid were an iron. I was at the driving range earlier today, without the benefit of your post. I will make a special trip tomorrow and I hope I have the results you experienced.

                              Hi Matey,

Just seen your post and with some easy explaination you will fall in love with your hybrid.

1st understand the hybrid concept - which is that the hybrid is either a 2, 3 or 4 iron club with the same loft as normal irons but with extra weight behind the club face.

Now to get the ball to fly great distances you need to swing hitting down onto the ball as you wood with any irons thus creating a divot after the ball.

My feeling is that you are treating the hybrid like a wood / driver where with these clubs you need to hit the ball on the upswing. If you adopt this type of swing you will not get the best potential from the hybrid.

One tip that I can give for hitting the hybrids, is to try when your at the driving range hitting a ball with your feet together, this will start to teach you to hit down on the ball, to make it airbourne.

Also one other key factor is to check your ball postion in your stance this should not change and be the same if you where hitting a iron that your hybrid is for i.e. ball in the postion of your 4 iron. For me this is about 1 1/4 inch to my left from centre of my stance.

                              Hope it helps
                              Cheers
                              Mark
