    Re: Gripping too tight

    Hi Aft mate,

Glad to see you back on here and that you are better.

I had the same problem when I was starting out of overgriping and this was psychological as my mind was thinking I might be lossing the club. My pro told me to focus my mind by swinging an open tube of toothpaste which sounded totally stupid too me but it did work.

It might be a that your over gripping due to your sub concious mind trying to protect your wrist from injury again. I say this because it is a natural instinct that a tighter grib will cause a limited natural wrist movement.

But dont do what I did the first time and swing the toothpaste with the lid to the floor as on the down swing some to the toothpaste went all over my wooden floor. Open the lid so it faces you and not the ground.

    Cheers
    Mark

      Hi Aft,

I try to imagine that all my clubs have a 7 on them when I set my tempo and grip strength. It may be that you are subconsciously gripping harder with longer clubs to create more force and distance?

      Just a guess!

Through the years i've asked my low handi buddies to grip my forearm the way they grip the golf club and all of them had a firm to very firm grip pressure.

            1) Does gripping too tightly actually result in twisting of the club at impact? I thought the twisting would be more of a result of gripping too lightly?

            2) I noticed the pros tape their right hand fingers between the knuckle and 2nd joint. Why do they do that?

              Here's some tips from pros:

Gary Player: Hold the club as if your holding a budgie(bird). Hold it like your not gonna kill it, but don't let it fly away. This is the best way to check your grip pressure.

Butch Harmon - Couch(Tiger Woods - Until 2003, Currently Adam Scott): According to Tiger there is 2 pressure points in the grip. The first is the three top fingers of the left hand and the second is the cussion on the right hand pushing down on the left thumb.

Beware of a tight grip. It tightens the muscles and hampers the smooth flow of the swing and therefore influencing your consistency. The whole body tends to tighten up when you grip to tight.

                Hi Forelife,

Why exactly did you want your buddies to grip your forearms?

                    1) I usually end up choking the club open when I grip it too tight.

                    2) I have no idea.

                      Re: Gripping too tight

                      Hello

                      A grip test exercise:

Swing smoothly to table leg or to something stuck on the floor and see what is hapenning just after the impact.
Obviously stop your motion but you'll feel a big tension in your hands at this point.
This show you if your right hand (for right handed) separates from the other at impact.
I know a golf ball is not stuck on the ground but in a full swing the clubhead travels around 100 mph and the forces when impacts occurs are huge ( Newtons 3rd Law: Action-reaction ). Just try to compress the ball with your fingers as a clubhead do at impact.

                      Hope this help you.

                      Toni.
