I use any Srixon ball that is low compresson. They fly good, roll straight, and if I hit them high enough, they stop on a dime. Very few golfers can actually spin a ball backwards, and besides the course/green conditions need to be right to spin a ball backwards. Too many variables in spinning a ball backwards, so I now go for lobs, or shots that I can roll up to the pin. Much easier, with better control. GJS

No longer is it the 50-50 percent profit to cost ratio, it is the 600% markup.

I couldn't agree more. I have a 17 year old son that plays golf and is pretty good (3 hcp) and he doesn't play anything but ProV1's or similar. I try to tell him that there are other cheaper balls (like the ones I use ) that are just as good, but he won't listen. Hopefully he'll come around once he has to pay for them out of his own wages (no, I don't pay his balls - the club sponsors them or he finds them on course).

The only thing I think is important with golf balls is to always use the same type of ball. Whether it costs $10 or $45 a dozen is of little importance to the score.

your right in saying your not aloud to change balls between holes unless ball damaged but you can change it from hole to hole if ball is of the same make and number, so you could play the par 5s with a distance ball and the par 3s with a spin ball but it has to be same make and number on both. but not change the ball after you have driven off till after you have holed out.
told tiger use to do this and carried 2 spin balls and 4 distance ones, think his proto ball does both now lol.

Wilson Staff PX3s or TX4s.

I played with Top Flight Yellows for a long time, but I found these I fell in love. With both type of of Wilson Staff balls I can stop them on a dime on the green. I even did a test with my old TF balls and the WS balls, and the WS balls just huge the greens more. Plus they just went down in price too...WHOOT!

Local Rule only. There's nothing about changing balls completely between holes. I used to play distance balls except on par 3's, where I'd play a spin ball. The only problem with this is you need to know your distances with that spin ball.

You can change balls between holes, nothing wrong with it.

The tour professionals can not go from playing a distance ball and switch to a spin ball, they are under the one ball rule.

What I was driving at was people who hit a distance ball on their drives and then switch to a spin ball on the second shot and turn their scores in for handicap purposes. I have watch people do that so many times.

That's legal - as long as they apply the appropriate penalty for illegal substitution; and for every stroke made thereafter - a penalty for a stroke made at the wrong ball.

I have tried just about every ball on the market at some time and I guess its down to what the individual prefers.

I have settled on Pinnacle balls now, I like the red Distance ball in the winter and have been playing the blue Exception in the summer. The Exception has great feel and is good for driving. The red Distance is a little harder and works well in winter conditions. Both have very good surface layers that are resistant to scuffs and splits.

On a recent visit the the USA I purchased some of Pinnacles new CLR balls that have a see through outer layer, now these balls are awesome, great off the driver and with a fantastic feel on the greens. In my estimation they are unbeatable for the price. (I don't work for Pinnacle )

i dont think you gain anything from playing a spin ball on some holes and a distance ball on others, as the new balls seem to be so good and have a soft feel and also seem to have best of both, both spin and distance is not worth the bother switching. i do think like you that its cheating switching a ball thats in play if it is not so damaged you can see it where it lies.

Having enjoyed a couple of sleeves of V1 balls (while hating the price), I was happy to find This article.

It's a test of balls made by comparing compression of the core and the softness of the cover.

As you can see, a couple of balls come quite close to the V1, mainly the Titleist NXT Tour and the Callaway CB1 Blue - both of which are close to half the price of the V1.

Now, I'm not saying that the V1 is the way to go for every golfer out there, but this test makes it pretty easy to find alternatives to your favourite ball.

Let's say you are partial to Wilson Staff True Distance balls at $40 a sleeve, then you are like to find, that TopFlite ProXL3000 Super Spin at $18 a sleeve is quite a good alternative at less than half the price.

If anybody is counting votes, here's another for the NXT Tour (if you hadn't noticed by now). It's a very nice ball.

My conclusion? I'll move away from spin balls (as they hurt me off the tee), and find a ball that either stuns or releases a couple feet on my home course (something with less spin - like a Srixon Soft Feel).

I love the Rev Tour off the tee.

I agree Pro V 1 or Plus are good balls.One should play with same type and compression now days compression is not stated but in my days it did. Like TIT balata with 90 or 100.
