  • My Swing, Once Again Revisited.

I know I had previously posted about how AJ's methods was the way to go for me - I was without a doubt wrong. While it resulted in great contact, I noticed my distance was suffering by 5 to 10 yards. I plan on playing competively sometime soon, so that kind of loss in distance is not what I want.

My long game is hurting a bit, so I'm rebuilding my swing with the iron game. I'm currently about a 5 HCP, that is all mostly to do with my short-game. While I hit the ball crisp, I just don't get that penetrating ball-flight that I want.

Here are a few things I see wrong:

-Slight Swaying - I start my backswing with a shift to the left then back to the right, and pivot around my right post from there, but it still looks like a bit of a sway. I try to stay moving before I swing, so this move serves as an ignition in a way.

    - Overswing - I used to be very armsy, so now I try not to use any arms in the backswing, this could promote some sort of overswing. I do remember to 'feel' like I'm stopping at parallel, which helps out greatly on contact.

    - Right heel comes off the ground on the downswing.

    - At impact it looks like my hands are a bit behind the imaginary ball. This could be a good reason why I'm not getting the ball flight I want and could be some scooping with the shorter irons.

If there's anything else, please, please let me know - thanks and I hope to post one of me on the driving range actually hitting some balls soon. Hopefully before the Kansas snow comes into town

matt, You need some space between your um, extra parts, and the butt end of your club
also, you dont turn your hips back much in the backswing. Look at gregs link to great swings and watch tiger, in the first 60* his shoulders turn his hips turn 45*, then his hips stop and the shoulders turn the rest of the way. the hips should turn free in the backswing untill they have coiled against the leg, then the shoulders finish untill they are fully coiled against the hips. Go here http://www.golf-tuition-online.com/g...ailed-you.html
watch tiger and when you get to the end you can go frame by frame
you downswing plane is steeper then your backswing plane, looks like you pull your arms in too much at the start of the backswing but I cannot go frame by frame and see exactly.

      sum it up,
more space between arms and butt end of club, when drawing a line straight down from the top of the right shoulder it should go somewhare about your right pointer finger, maybe a little farther out, but not farther in which is where you are
allow the hips to turn back in the backswing, this coils them into the foot
have arms go more up rather then around.

and btw, dont try to go step by step as in the 8 step swing, it will just mess you up

      that is my .02

Re: My Swing, Once Again Revisited.

You're bending your left arm alot in the backswing. Try to widen your takeaway, and try to take the club really high after that. That should straighten (don't make it stiff, though) your left arm up.

Also, you're casting. I don't know if you do this conciously or what, but there are many ways to fix this. You can try dragging the butt end of the club towards the ball, and there's the leadbetter pump drill. I suggest you do a search and you will find many fixes and swing thoughts to help you correct this mistake.

          Hi Matt,

I try not to read other people replies so not to sway my opinion........You are correct there are a few flaws, but we can see flaws in any swing so don't be disheartened.

Although there is no ball there, it is still reletivly representitive of your swing perhaps a little smoother, If I were to work on one thing it would be your takeaway you are very inside, thus across the line at the top with a slight overswing as you say....................all stems from the inside takeaway.

Work on the plane line from behind, at set up draw a line up your club shaft and stay above it going back, should feel really different but it will cure most of your faults....................

P.s impact I thought looks really good and your suppose to lift your right heel on the downswing near every tour pro does.

All in all not a bad swing at all mate.

          Ian.

Re: My Swing, Once Again Revisited.

Thanks guys for the quick and helpful responses. It's another chilly day, but I'm hoping the range is open - if not I'll just do the same thing.

I think this swing wasn't the greatest of examples - my attempt to try to weight shift first and then let the arms be as passive as possible seemed to make the swing worst. I'm still working on the idea of weight shift - which is something I don't believe I focused on before. My takeaway is very inside because of the lack of arm movement. I checked out Greg's posting of the pro-swings and Jose M Olazabal's swing is something I'd really love to emulate.

I appreciate the help and I'm excited to get to working on the swing, I love that there is always something to work on, don't think I'll ever lose interest in this game.

I'll post a video, hopefully, later on - thanks again guys.

Re: My Swing, Once Again Revisited.

Thanks for the post cmays - I'll be working on everything posted.

I decided to erase the swing from the thread. I was just trying something new and decided to record it. The swing felt allright, but there is no way to judge without a ball, and turns out it looks HORRIBLE. I would not be surprised without question if anyone is questioning my HCP,hehe.

But like I said I'm starting from scratch. And to start from scratch I need to find the perfect set-up position, as soon as I find that - I'll focus on the swing. I apologize for those of you that posted, but the video posted has alot more going wrong than it does right - so I'm basically axing it out of my memory...and hopefully yours.

              and now youtube's

btw, the pump drill is a pretty great drill - that really seemed to put me in great position at the top. Not to mention an early wrist cock.

Now, the downswing I have been trying, actually just started trying today, is pushing off with the right foot - is this correct?
