  • Descending blow

Much overrated; if anyone tells you to hit down on the ball with irons, tell them they don't understand the golf swing.
Its all about ball position and staying with the shot and not coming up and out of the shot.
Why do we come out of the shot? because we either chicken wing it or we have poor weight transfer and spine angle moving left instead of right.
Here is just one fix: there are many:
Take a narrow stance and addressing the ball, stand pidgeon toed with left foot
Take a practice swing and dig a divot next to the ball-good.
Now place a tee in front of your ball a few inches.
Take your address position, turn your shoulders, and allow your wrists to hinge feeling the weight of the clubhead as you do it, then fire away feeling like you are turning your right knee into your left knee at impact/finish.
Now thats' a golf swing to remember.

Take a divot next to the ball? Which side?

What was the purpose of the tee?

        Takingitdeep,

I respect your view, but surely if we are to keep the club on plane and not come ott, this combined with proper weight transfer, can only encourage a downward blow.

            Re: Descending blow

My point is that you have to hit the ball with a downward blow if the above points are part of a good golf swing. My teacher has always instilled a downward blow into my swing and it certainly works for me

As I tried but apparently failed to communicate, if you do what I listed in my original post, you don't have to worry about a downward blow, it will happen.
One should never have to think about a downward blow, if you do, you will no doubt have a bout with the "fats".
This is not something one has to think about, when all else is right, it just happens.
              Got it?
              Capeche?
How's your weather over there? I am in Florida and its cold now but warming up to 80's by Thursday. I would love to play in your neck of the woods sometime, when is the best time to come over there?
Its nice to have someone there to ask questions as we Yanks get a bit cloistered and don't realize there is a whole other part of the world out there.

We are just heading into spring. Today I played in 10 degrees with no rain or wind. This is exceptional at this time of year, but our weather is unpredictable. A good time to come here would be april/may. Feel free to come any time. Irish hospitality is always good!!

No I am not. This statement: "Take a practice swing and dig a divot next to the ball-good." Makes no sense. Dig a divot next to the ball or ball-good? And obviously if you are going to put a tee in front of the ball you intend for it to be hit, or maybe not, which tells me what? Tee it low, high or what?

                          hi takinitdeep
played on monday and it was 2%c and with the wind chill it took it down to -1 when near the sea, numb fingers and the clubs does jar them when so cold, wish i was playing in florida in 80%.
it what you have to play in if you want a game at golf in scotland in jan/feb/and march. take it robert's the same over in ireland.

IMHO your view is too generalistic. As with most things in the game there is more than one way to skin the cat. I was lucky enough to get some teaching a few months back from a TGM convert who plays off scratch. He taught me the hitting procedure using the right forearm to mash the ball into the ground at impact. Ive never hit the ball so well

Hitting in TGM is ALL about hitting down on the ball - just another way to get it done

Plus right now in Scotland, its windy and its cold. I want to hit knockdowns and low punches. Again im thinking of hitting down on the ball with a punchy action and short follow through

                            Its all good

We do need to hit down into the ball but I think Takinitdeep has a valid point, we should not have to think about it. If the ball is positioned correctly with respect to the club and my sternum, then during the downswing I drop the club onto plane, transfer weight, rotate my hips and keep my head down through the shot it just happens.
