Much overrated; if anyone tells you to hit down on the ball with irons, tell them they don't understand the golf swing.
Its all about ball position and staying with the shot and not coming up and out of the shot.
Why do we come out of the shot? because we either chicken wing it or we have poor weight transfer and spine angle moving left instead of right.
Here is just one fix: there are many:
Take a narrow stance and addressing the ball, stand pidgeon toed with left foot
Take a practice swing and dig a divot next to the ball-good.
Now place a tee in front of your ball a few inches.
Take your address position, turn your shoulders, and allow your wrists to hinge feeling the weight of the clubhead as you do it, then fire away feeling like you are turning your right knee into your left knee at impact/finish.
Now thats' a golf swing to remember.
