  • My free online review of the golf swing

I have just completed the first draft version of my free online review of the golf swing.

    It is available at http://perfectgolfswingreview.net

I have previously noted that there is no FREE online review of the golf swing available, although a few golf-related websites offer a few free golf tips.

I therefore decided to write a scholarly review of the golf swing and make it freely available online, so that it can serve as a free educational resource for beginner golfers. I have tried to be as neutral as possible in my golf instructional approach and I have generally followed traditional golf instructional teaching.

You will note that my website is unadorned and very simple. I wanted the online review to be like a textbook, so that one can read the review as if one were reading a golf instructional book. Although my website style is very simple, I have used my Photoshop skills to create many complex composite images that can help clarify a golf instructional point. I hope that beginner golfers find my composite images instructive.

I intend to expand the review by adding many topics to the miscellaneous section, and I will activate the hyperlinks when they are completed. I also plan to add more golf tips to each relevant section of the review over an extended time period. My continuing interest in this project will likely depend on the number of appreciative website vistors I get over an extended period of time.

Please send me negative feedback (criticism) if you think that I have made any gross errors. I would like my review to be as accurate and as rational as possible.

    Jeff.

Awesome! its on my favorites list.

Jeff could you comment on this idea of cocking the wrist really early & shutting the club face this fast. http://www.newgolfswing.com/newgolfswing05.php

this is the part of my game that i cant figure, I know if i can get this right, I should be on my way to playing 80's golf

how does this compare to Badds? or to Hogan?

      Regards,

      Mike

Great achievement Jeff, for golf junkies like me it's priceless.

Unless I have missed something some navigation buttons would help to jump around the site.

          Thanks for the kind comments.

I think it is a major mistake to start the backswing takeaway with such an abrupt cocking of the wrists. It results in four potential faults that can accumulatively ruin the backswing process - i) it can make the backswing too narrow (too close to the body); ii) it can make the backswing arc too steep: iii) it encourages one to start the takeaway with a hand movement that causes there to be a seperation between the hands/arms and shoulders/upper torso in the early backswing so that the body doesn't move as a synchronised unit during the backswing; iv) it doesn't encourage lateral movement to the right which may result in a reverse pivot.

He argues that this early cocking is required to prevent an open face during the backswing. I think that the cure is worse than the disease. The correct method of preventing an open face during the takeaway is described in my review - keep the hands/wrists neutral during the takeaway by taking the hands straight back. One also needs some width during the backswing and the one piece takeaway move (arms and shoulders moving together) allows one to get some width and also avoid an open clubface.

See the takeaway subsection of my backswing section of my review, and particularly read question 9. Many people have the wrong conception of what an one piece takeaway means.

Brian - could you give me an idea how navigation buttons would help? To get from where to where? My idea is that one could hit the back button to get back to the homepage (index page) from any section of the review, and then click on another hyperlink to get to another section of the review.

          Jeff.

Re: My free online review of the golf swing

              Jeff,

What if the wrist cocking is not abrupt at the start of the backswing?

It was also mentioned in George Peper's "The Secret of Golf", that...there is a slight 'curling under" with the last three fingers of the left hand while the clubhead moves straight back from the ball...This curling under occurs at the very start of the backswing, just as the clubhead moves back from the ball...(Dick Aultman's The Square-to-Square Golf Swing).

                Hi Jeff,

I was just suggesting a set of hyperlinks or buttons on each page that could direct you back to any other page.

Great work, Jeff...We all appreciate what you are doing and have done for the game of golf. I have been playing for a good number of years and have read many books on golf instruction. Your work ranks near or at the top of my list. And the price is right.
                  Thanks,

                    Jeff,

great job, makes for good reading and understanding for beginners nad others such as myself. understanding the mechanics and physics of a golf swing is far more important then hitting balls at the range endlessley without a clue.

However, could you please include drills for each section (backswing, downswing, impact and follow through) for us beginners to enjoy the game more often.

                    Thanks, awsome job....

                      Brian,

I have now placed hyperlinks on the top of every page (section) of the review. I hope that they will be useful, and that it satisfies your request.

                      Darkhorse

You write: "It was also mentioned in George Peper's "The Secret of Golf", that...there is a slight 'curling under" with the last three fingers of the left hand while the clubhead moves straight back from the ball...This curling under occurs at the very start of the backswing, just as the clubhead moves back from the ball...(Dick Aultman's The Square-to-Square Golf Swing)."

I am not sure what you mean by curling under of the last three fingers of the left hand during the early takeaway. Those three fingers are already under the clubshaft at address. When viewed from the back (down-the-line), a viewer should be able to see the ends of the last three fingers of the left hand. Then, during the first 12" of the takeaway, if the takeaway is neutral, those fingers should still be seen. If the left wrist rolls over, the fingers will disappear from view.

                      Blackheath

I may well consider adding drills at a future date. The process of generating this review was very labor-intensive (> 500 hours work), so I will wait and see if my free website gets a sufficient number of appreciative vistors before I consider expanding my website.

                      Jeff.

                        Jeff,

If I am not mistaken, the 'curling under' of the last three fingers of the left hand in the backward wrist break is very similar to the Fig 13A in the website link posted by Whizz.

OK. I think I get it. I suspect that what is meant by "curling the fingers" is a deliberate combined palmar flexion-supination movement of the left wrist to prevent the left wrist from rotating over (pronating) during the early takeaway and thereby opening the clubface. I personally don't think that it is advisable to manipulate the wrists or hands at all during the takeaway. I think that the hands should be neutral in the early takeaway (as if the hands are encased in a plaster cast) until the hands reach the right trouser pocket. Then the left wrist can upcock and pronate a little, so that at the end-takeaway position (when the left arm is at the 8 o'clock position), the clubshaft is parallel to the ground and the toe of the club points straight up.

Mr. Mann, a very fine effort on your part. You have created a good thing for aspiring golfers. As you know many can talk a good golf game, and instruction, but only a small handful can creat what you have done. Good job. GJS

Just read the grip and address part. I think I will try to digest one or two parts at a time. The key thing I got out of it today was the pushing the butt back to establish the spine angle rather than bending at the waist which is what I always do. That will be my swing thought of the week.
