      Re: cmays, lets change channels

Shootin - when I see the ball in the air, it's going straight at my target, no fade or draw. But then again, these were driving range balls - so maybe tomorrow I'll be able to find my flight on the par 3s since the majority of the course I'm going to be playing is all hills.

Another note that is cool about this Shauger method - I have perfected the "stinger" shot, it's amazing how much flexibility you can have in matters of ball placement.

well you say the short game is good so you would do yourself some good to pick a ball flight and play that. a fade is much easier for most people, but some prefer a draw. This will eliminate one side of the course for you. also, when coming into the green, bunker in front and green slopes left to right so where do you aim to miss it?

          Good point, Shootin.

I'll have to see how tomorrow turns out in matters of ball flight.

Bunker in front, green slopes left to right - my miss:

Long and right. So if I do miss, I can putt uphill rather than downhill. I pride myself in my putting, so leaving a good two putt would be perfect.

Another note - I don't know if I've mentioned it or not - but I got a SkyCaddie for Christmas and have used it everytime I'm on the course. The yardages that it gives me are front, center and back of the green - which is ridiculously helpful.

What's your miss in that question you posted, Shootin?

Cmays, Shootin - do you guys have any drills for the Driver?

I played a round today (+3, 73) and found that my driver was hooking more than I wanted - since I had to play the hook, I had to aim a bit more to the right than usual - my fairway stats were 7/13.

Could it be tempo? I have a narrow stance and use a backward press on my driver.

btw, I'm asking you guys because you're the only ones on here that seem knowledgeable of the MA and Shauger method.

                Re: cmays, lets change channels

question, when you set up for an iron on the ground, is the ball in the center of your clubface? when you set up for a driver on the tee do you set the ball up in the center of the clubface?

                  Re: cmays, lets change channels

                  Thanks for the responses guys.

I just came back from the range and managed to hit a couple of non-hooks by slowing down my backswing and letting things flow a bit more. But this isn't my natural tempo - so I'm still searching.

Shootin - all clubs are center of the clubface, I didn't think about changing it on the driver.

                    Re: cmays, lets change channels

since the ball is stitting up high then try teeing the driver on the toe and see what happens and report back on it. Also, put on your thinking cap and try to tell me why that could possibly solve your problem

                      Re: cmays, lets change channels

Thanks Shootin...... There's another penny dropping......

I set up all my irons on the toe, don't know why, just always have and hit them reasonably well. Have always struggled with a pull hook with the driver and I set it up to the to as well, but, as you say, given the ball is teed much higher, then I SHOULD be teeing the ball outside the toe to compensate for the elevation of the clubhead through impact..........

Will try this and see whats what tomorrow.

                      Cheers

                        Thinking cap? ****.

I believe it's because the club is traveling so far inside so that on the downswing the club's path is more outside....

This is why I come here - to learn; I have no idea what I just wrote, nor do I think it's remotely correct.

Fortunately, that is not quite true, but we don't all join every debate. That doesn't mean that we don't listen and try to learn.

So PLEASE don't stop bringing new things to the table. I - for one - thoroughly enjoy it !

                            Re: cmays, lets change channels

I'm trying to figure this out. Which one is the right one? Dan Shauger's method or Mike Austin's?

I recently got Shauger's "How to Kill the Ball" and love it. I just don't understand a couple of things - but looking on the MA forums, pretty much everyone is Anti-Shauger, including Thomas Dang.

I found this little tidbit on Jaacob Bowden's (Shauger's protege) website:

                            http://www.jaacobbowden.com/mikeaustin.html

There seem to be several versions of the hand-action that Mike used. Which one is the right one?

As you can see further below on this page, there are many products and people that are affiliated with the Mike Austin swing. Everyone seems to generally agree on the pivot, however, the biggest difference is the rolling hand-action, or curling under hand-action. So who is right?

In the 1990s and prior, Mike taught a rolling hand-action. You will see this demonstrated in all of the videos that were made during this time. After he had his stroke and became paralyzed on his right side, he was basically left only to be able to ponder the golf swing. In the last few years before he died, he changed his outlook from a rolling hand-action to one that curls under and keeps the blade squarer longer. The problem is that Mike didn't make another video after he changed his viewpoint. The Peace River video was re-released as a DVD with extra footage, but the actual instruction remained the same old stuff. Also, whether it was old-age or stubborness or what, Mike would also contradict himself in these later years of his life. There was one time when Dan Shauger ( a close friend of Mike's for nearly 25 years) and Jaacob were at Mike's house working in Mike's garage and Mike was insisting that the Flammer produced the new curling under motion that he was professing, when in fact it produces a rolling hand-action. Dan modified the pivot so that it produced the curling under motion, yet Mike still insisted that the original Flammer did so. It did not. So it is understandable that some might not think that Mike professed the curling under action...even in Mike's later years.

In addition, in 2003, Dan began putting together a tribute book to Mike as told through the eyes of Dan, the How to Kill the Ball book (see below). In it included the new hand-action that Mike was professing. Mike was happy about it and even put up funding to put the book together. However, when Dan finished the book Mike began claiming that Mike himself had written it, when in fact, Dan had written it. Understandably so, Dan was upset about this and Jaacob was witness to a big arguement over it. This situation damaged their friendship all the way through to when Mike passed away. Unfortunately, many people do not know this story. So later on when the rights of the Mike Austin stuff were taken over and other people met Mike, Mike gave Dan a bad rap. Thus the discrepancy between those who advocate the rolling action and those like Dan who knew and were witness to Mike's change of viewpoint. Yes, Mike taught a rolling hand-action. But in the end, he also taught the curling under hand action and came to believe that it was the better of the two.

                              Matt,
say you wanted to learn about a method of life jesus used. If you had access to his writings or videos, and you had access to his diciples writings or videos, which one would you choose? I would go with austin on it, he was the scientist

Cmays, it sure must be nice to play as you do, not golf per se but rather just go out and hit balls however you feel like it from one day to the next and tinker. One day cmays I will sit with you and talk about the days we play and how the clubhead sings. had an interesting conversation with sir squish. I now have an understanding of the post where you guys talked about the finger pressure on each hand and how it controls the golf swing. so while you and him have the high spades, I at least now have a spade and I am looking to turn it into a higher card, maybe not the ace or even a ten quite yet, but a spade non the less. we drive with our fingers, write with our fingers, eat with our fingers, our body reacts to our hands. Field testing anxiously awaits. I have a full week of vacation to go dig some dirt. I knew I got into teaching for a reason. spring break, oh and thanksgiving break, christmas break, summer break, plus nine other days at random for when the waves our good.
anyways, I am not laying my money down on the table just yet, time to improve my hand, or hands I should say. when you gonna play with the big boys better know what you got in your hands

squeezing the fingers of the right hand into release and letting go of the left hand. left hand on the way back, right hand on the way down.
as always, correct me if I am wrong.
If I am right, I would like to thank squish for spending 1:40 on the phone with someone he has never met. I took notes and found some good places to go in the austin dvds.
