Seems to me that a lot of posters on this topic have years of practicing the full swing but, at best, have tried this method a couple of times before deciding on its merits.
I would agree with Greg's comments; If there's a basic flaw in someone's takeaway (which there very often is), this method will help to eliminate that. Another point is that a lot of handicap players, regardless of their backswing, mess thing up on the transition. This method will also help that. It may even be a good way of teaching new players.
Anyone who gets into hopeless positions at the top of the backswing or can't transfer their weight properly might also benefit. I can't see any inherent reason why any distance should be lost for those players.
All that said, I don't think the pros will be heading down that route. With a grooved swing, the entire action builds upon itself. The full swing, executed properly, has a natural timing built in which gives greater distance and, as far as I can see, equally good directional control. I guess the pros proove that.
