  • Iron Help PLEASE!!!

I would like some suggestions from you guys that are qualified to help me. I am stuck at six and it's not my short game or putting. I have the most difficult time hitting solid iron shots. All my clubs are custom fit to me and I have had all the shafts pured so I should be without excuse right???

Here's the scenario, I crush the driver and 3 wood, but rarely hit solid iron shots. I tried stack and tilt for a couple of months and it was great at first, but I lost so much distance with the driver, 3 wood and hybrid, that I switched back to turning onto my right side and really getting behind the ball. The problem is, the shorter the club, (specialty wedges not included 50,56,60) the more trouble I have. I do not slice or hook the ball much, my misses are usually short of the green or airmail. I really want to consistently hit crisp iron shots that I feel maybe once per round of golf. I need to know how to keep my hands completely out of the swing as far as my brain is concerned.

    Thanks for any suggestions,

    Re: Iron Help PLEASE!!!

As close as you are at a "6" golfer, have you taken the time to have your eyes checked? Most single digit golfers have great hand/eye coordination. If the eyes are off by just a little, then that hand/eye coodination is off just as much.

This is a belief of my wife, who is a retired M.D. and carries a 15 handicap from the same tees I play from. Never the womens tee. She can play. I couldn't handle getting beat from the reds,............... by my wife.

My own opinion is that you have release problem. You are not releasing your hands/clubhead at the correct time, every time. I asume this because you said your shots were either short, or long. Multiple release points, at impact will alter shot distance, due to the fact the loft of the club is some what controlled by the release. .........GJS

Have you read Dave Pelz "Short Game bible" ? If not I would recommend it to you, it covers in detail exactly the issues you have raised. GJS suggestions of multiple release points are a major factor in it.

This website may be a good refresher read.

Five Fundamentals Of Iron Play | Golf Tips Magazine

Hope it helps! I have yet to try it out, but I'm going to take what I read to the range and work out the bugs....

I myself am a single digit struggling with iron play..!! it sucks!!!

I have to agree with GolfJunkie on that one. It seems to me you don't release the hands/club correctly. You need to work on your timing in order to execute a perfect release. Hey, if you really need it, you should take an hour with your local pro. Hell, he might even see some other problem you didn't think you had.

          Good luck!

            Re: Iron Help PLEASE!!!

To hit solid with irons you need a little more weight forward in the stance or left leg for the right hander.

I this true? I hear this and then I hear to make sure the weight goes back to the inside if the right thigh for a righty. When I try o keep weight on my right foot a kind of feel like I'm reverse pivoting. Can you elaborate a little on this subject. I've always been interested in this but have never got a clear answer as to how this works.

            Thanks in advance!!!

I've only recently become aware of this and I have to say it's hard to fix. When I can keep that right knee braced and the weight inside, it seems to fix a lot of things. But that foot just *wants* to rock to the outside. Slowing the backswing down helps me to focus on it, but it's still tough.
