    Re: Adding distance?

One thing that i have just recalled to memory is when i purchased AJ Bonars 'The truth about golf' and it insisted that the main difference between amateurs and pros was not only swing speed but also another aspect in the swing. This involves opening and closing the clubface before and after impact which idealy adds extra power to shots. Any pros here who know about this mystery?

I tried it for a while and the results were ok. Yes the ball was traveling 10 to 15 yards further on my drive yet it for some reason over complicated my swing and i found that i would hit 1 scourching 260 yard drive and then the next would be either a 250 yard hook or slice which really does not help as we all know especially at my club which has tight narrow fairways and beyond 2 1/2 ft deep rough.

I asked my teaching pro when i had a lesson and he said although it is true and will gain you extra valuble yards it is simply not worth the risk!

What do people think of this technique?

      Re: Adding distance?

I am not sure how they actually measure swing speed, but I wonder if that extra sudden quick rotation just before impact will actually increase swing speed so to speak (if you are measuring at impact instant).

I think AJ's instructions liken impact to driving a nail in with the hammer, and that sounds a lot like a hitter rather than a swinger, and suggest using more of the hands. Might be better suited for beginners/seniors/ladies/children but I guess the rest of us would prefer to be swingers and take the hands out of the swing.

I'm actually putting together quite a few theories and assumptions in this, so feel free to give your own comments for discussion

Are you maybe talking about playing a Draw, that adds a few extra yards to your shots.

sort of draw is a by product of doing this IF you have the clubface a certain way at impact however by turning the wrists will also make the clubhead move faster. you will have to watch AJ The truth about golf to find out the main reasons for this as it is very long winded

I find that a slow take away diminishes the possibility of a bad strike. If you practice a slow take away and your distance improves, you can then work on other areas such as width of stance, ball psition, spine angle etc. I persisted with this exercise for quite a while and now aperfect drive for me can be 290yards!

That kind of sounds like a misinterpretation of Hogan's supination concept, i.e. the left wrist bows toward the target right before impact. Which, if you try that with a club you'll see it closes the face a bit "trapping" the ball against the turf.

Yes, I just test drove the R5, R7, Nickent 3DX & G5. Stiff shaft, swing speed is about 105-110mph.
I hit them all pretty well. I found that when I tried to crank it up, I lost control and hit it outside in, the following ball flight resembled a rainbow to the right.

When I did a smooth controlled take away, I cracked em all pretty good, Pretty straight, pretty high & pretty far. 250 ish at the range, but I can't see that far, so I know nothing about the roll.

Once I decide upon a driver, I'll get to know it a bit better before I try to max my distance.

                I like the Ping best.
                It sounds sweet
I gonna take it out for a round on Wednesday. 1st time golfing in 3 years.

OOh!! .. If you are looking for a utility, the Ben Hogan CFT Ti rocks, I liked it alot better than Taylor made, Adams, Nickent genex & DC.

                  Re: Adding distance?

player a cotacts the ball at 120 but when his club face leaves the ball it is going 100

Player b contacts the ball at 110 but when his club face leaves the ball it is going 105

player b hits it farther with a slower swing speed because he has better impact allignments
