Re: What arent they telling us?

How do you really get clubhead speeds well over 100mph without sacrificing accuracy. What arent they telling us?[/quote]

It's a gift. A few weeks ago, a single golfer joined our group and he had to take "some off of it" to keep it inside of 300 yards. He also got an Eagle that day. At 6'3 and 260lbs and a John Daly type swing it was a beautiful thing to watch.

It also helps to start at a young age. When you start at young age you can get amazing lag and hit the ball hard, thats what i think anyway cos thats whats happened with me.

You don 't need powder or enginerring blue or anything like that. Just lick your thumb, and wipe off the face of your driver. When you hit the ball it will leave a faint mark on the face. You'll be able to see the dimple marks if you look closely. Then you'll know how far off you are.

I think the sweet spot is much bigger than the cross-hair mentioned above. On my Mizuno I can hit a decent shot just about anywhere on the face. Sure it's better right in the middle but only slightly. Now if you're way off on the toe or heel then you're buggered.

            Ricky,

There is no argument that starting any sport young is an advantage.

Regarding hitting the ball harder, think about it?

Re: What arent they telling us?

I am realy impressed with myself I found that sweet spot. How you might ask? Well, I didn't think about my swing , or how I stood or even my wrist action. I just ligned the club up correctly ,addressed the ball , swung the club back till I could see it out of the corner of my left eye. swung through ,watched it brush the ground infront of the ball (didnt look at the ball after addressing it but rather at the ground infront of it). then kept my head down till I saw the club out the corner of my right eye. pushing my right shoulder in the direction of the target on the follow through (under arm throw feel). ball went 100% straight and kept going for 300m. didn't even feel the contact. After that I just duplicated the swing and averaged 270m (295 yards) all day :-) Thanks guys for all the input.

                Hey Bill,

I think that you are talking about the hot spot. The sweet spot is a bit more bigger than that.

Personaly , I don't mind what you call "the spot". For me , the point is that up till last week I battled to break 200 m. Now my swing feels comfortable and I hit an average of 270m during both my rounds last weekend. The one shot , I thought I had missed the ball 'cos I didnt feel it hit........ It went a good 300m , that is including the roll on.

Re: What arent they telling us?

Although I have read that one should not watch the ball and other stuff like topping isn't because of not watching the ball and other garbage, there is no denying that the longer one stays down and through the shot the better the strike and easier to get the sweet spot. Not many folks can stay committed to the shot without watching the ball.
In no other sport are you expected to hit a ball without watching it, golf is no different. Its about hand eye coordination and you can not have HEC without using the E.
                    Congratulations me laddie.

That is so true, not the least when you're putting! Keeping the head still does a lot of good things to your swing, no matter what other people say. The problem is remembering to stay down and to commit to it for 18 holes.

tiger, jack, hogan, nelson, jones none of them kept their head still, down yes, but not still. The head stays down as a result of good swing mechanics, trying to keep it down will not result in good mechanics

Sorry, I did mean "down". Used the wrong word.

I am not sure what you mean by the quote above. Don't you consider keeping the head down a part of good swing mechanics?

Actually, the reason to try to keep down is that if you lift your head up too early, most of the time you will straighten your knees and/or back as well, change your pivot point upwards and most probably top or thin the ball.

The way Annika or Jack moves their head is different from what we are talking about: their head follow their body naturally in a sideways motion, not up and down.

Re: What arent they telling us?

if you have to struggle to keep you head down you messed up your swing somwhere along the line way before that point. here is a simple drill to truly understand what I am talking about
take practice swings and swing VERY outside in 3-4 times and notice what the head does, then swing VERY inside out and notice what the head does. What the head does in the golf swing should be way down on the list of things to think about, or off that list completely. head lifting up is usually caused by bad swing path, over the top, or a lunge.
try that little test and let me know what you found,

Eye on the ball=ball go far
                                Nothing about keeping head rigid.
