Really? My experience is that head lifting is caused by curiosity more than anything. BTW, I don't have that problem myself (except on short putts )

Re: What arent they telling us?

Lifting the head is not really a problem in it's self, its the other things that lift: legs, hips, spine, shoulders etc that cause problems.

The head is extended from the spine, it's movements are restricted by the movements of the spinal joints in the neck, what it can't do is lurch from side to side on it's own. Large shifts of the head in the swing are a symptom of sways in the torso, which we know are undesirable.

The body tends to follow the head; few can resist it, if the head moves up, the body follows. Side to side ok, up not ok.

all you have to do is swing, not hit a ball
swing from the inside 3-4 times
swing over the top 3-4 times
while looking at a spot on the floor, grass
notice where your head ends up in relation to your target line and notice if one pulls you up quicker then the next.

as far as the body following the head, in doing back flips like a gymnist and full spins, ice skater, yes the body does follow the head. In golf, baseball, tennis, the head has a target that it will fixate on and only leave that target when the body pulls it off of it.

Ok average player shouldent compare themselves to ANY tour player, but when I went to watch celtic manor wales open (european tour event) I watched monty and a few others and yes GREAT BALLSTRIKERS, then i watched players such as Jose Manuel lara, jose filipe lima, Jarmo Sandelin and a few others and I saw them hit quite a few shots off toe or heel or bottom! I saw many of them hit driver shots off the bottom and stuff and push it out to the right and have the club flying out there hands they caught it so far off the toe, i saw it all! We only see the players on tele 95% of the time and the players shooting 59-66 each week!

The sweetspot on a driver is pretty damn big these days! And its definatly bigger than the smily face icon!! On an Iron its more like this size __________ the size of a golf ball.
how on earth can you tell where they're hitting it on the clubface??

I'll explain what I mean: Has anyone ever been to the range and just puring all your irons and I mean your swing is beautifully in sync, tempo is great, balance, everything, and the game for that short while seems "easy" your irons feel like butter and then out of nowhere you get one ball that just feels like you didn't hit anything at all. It flies that little bit longer and straighter. Now I still believe thet the other strikes were out of the sweetspot and felt great and pure, then you hit the sweetsweetspot which is prob the size of the icon above as bill says! Has anyone ever experienced this?
As regards Pros hitting the ball so far, I read before that it's from efficiency of movement. They have no moving parts that aren't meant to be moving, everything in their swing has a purpose and therefore all the energy that they exert goes directly into the ball.
my best drive is 365 downwind on a links course.
Been there. Lots of great strikes. Then a PURE one. Oooh baby.

Re: What arent they telling us?

Have your driver fitted with the correct launch angle and shaft flex. I gained 30 metres of carry by having my driver fitted. As suggested earlier the pros play on perfect fairways with plenty of run. My driver is all fly i very rarely get more than five metres run on most courses unless i hit the ball extremely low. Personally i think too much hype is put on length. No one cares how long you hit it your score after the 18th is all that matters. As the saying goes DRIVE FOR SHOW PUTT FOR DOUGH

Re: What arent they telling us?

Arch, if your driver is all fly as you say, you are not entirely sweeping the ball with an ascending blow. If you can sweep your drives from low to high you impart more roll when it lands. Also, hitting a draw will help.

One thing I noticed about the long
drivers when I saw them was that
their spine angles were more upright
                          than most golfers.

the sweet spot is basically the center of gravity, and sweet spot on your putter is the same size as your 460cc driver. the only thing that makes a difference is how forgiving the club is. the design of the club may maximize the distance on offcenter shots, but all the "sweet spots" are the same size.

my personal opinion on that is, unless you are actually playing for money, id rather hit the ball far. im sure 95% of the common golfers would rather see someone carry the ball 350 than see someone shoot a 72 or have 28 putts.

Re: What arent they telling us?

the key to distance is all about technique, physical shape helps alot, but technique is the most important thing. ive seen guys who can bench 300lbs golf and they hit it 230, while im 6' 160 and i can fly it 100yds past them.

and im sorry to tell you all this, but distance is innate. you arent going to be able to go from hitting it 200 to 250. you will be able to pick up a few yards, but nothing is going to get you to hit substancially farther. you have to have always hit the ball far to be a long hitter.

ive had my swing speed measured using radar and other things and i average around 120 if im swinging well, and i can get over 125 if i juice things up. i can bomb it out there pretty well, and i always have hit it far. when i was like 12 or so i was hitting it farther than some of the older guys at the course.

im posting a new article for more distance
