    Re: What wedges

on our greens, we don't really have to worry about sucking the ball back.

my 52d will stay in my bag until i find a good 3w to replace it.

      Re: What wedges

That artical in the golfmidatlantic.com was great, Spiffo btw.

I still can't seem to get an sold shot from my gap wedge. I chunk it every time. I am tired of laying back a pitching wedge and forget about my 56 degree. Should I think about resizing the club? It was one my father gave me and he is 2 inches taller.

        Re: What wedges

I ditched my 5W (since I couldn't hit it much farther nor as reliably than my 3 Hybrid) to add a fourth wedge, and I'm glad I did. I now have 3 Callaway FT wedges (45 PW, 50 AW, 55 SW) and a Nike Tiger Woods 60 LW. The original Callaway iron set came with only a PW and SW. I received the LW as a birthday gift and added the AW after discovering that I had trouble hitting the SW from the fairway. While SW is fine from the sand, it seems to have too much bounce for tight lies. The AW, on the other hand, really feels nice hitting from the fairway. Fewer fat and thin shots means better distance control. I also like it for chipping around the green unless I am short-sided and need a more lofted club.

I play with four wedges, PW- 48, Gap-50, 54 and 58. I took the 5 wood out of my bag to make room for the gap. My set is made up as follows:

          Driver, 3w, 3i hybrid, 4i hybrid, 5-9 i plus the wedges above.

            3 Wedges

I carry 3 wedges with me whenever I play. I have a PW, 52 and a 56 degrees. The 56 is mostly used for around the green when I want to get the golf ball up high and stop dead, perhaps going over a bunker. Usually no further than say 80 metres out from the green and closer.

I have played with guys that have used 60 degrees and they all agreed it was just too much loft. The ball would go straight up in the air and not go the required distance. I guess it may be a personal thing but worth maybe trying and practicing a lot with. I wouldn't rule it out but just keep that in mind.

I personally think 56 degrees is more than enough given most situations you encounter in a game of golf.

              Re: What wedges

A 60 deg lob wedge is a great tool for me. My course has a great deal of steep greenside bunkers and it allows me to play nice flop shots that fly high and stop up dead on landing, I can also open the face to get some spectacular high flops. The sand at my club has been changed to a very fine high quality type and I have found that I can play very exact bunker shots using my lob wedge, I just have to alter the distance I hit behind the ball for varying distances that stop up fast with plenty of spin, this allows me to attack the pin position aggressively.

I know that many golfers struggle with their lob wedges but I have found it to be the most useful club in my bag but it took a lot of practice to get there though. I found Phil Mickelson's book 'Secrets of the Short Game' very enlightening on how to play wedges well. His hinge and hold technique worked wonders for my short game.

                Re: What wedges

                I actually have 7 wedges:

The PW from my set of Mizuno MP-67s,
and 6 Mizuno MP-T Raw series in different lofts and bounce configurations
                50/6
                51/6
                54/8
                56/10
                58/10
                60/5

From these 6 I usually pick 3 depending on course conditions (wet/dry/soft/hard) and conditions of bunkers (sand type).

On rare occasions, I only pick 2, to add a 4-iron to my bag instead.
