    Re: Basic chipping\pitching technique

Playing yesterday, I was on the SI 1 5th hole and blocked my drive into longish and wet rough.

Somehow smashed it out with a hybrid but was still +/- 5 yards from the green with the hole about the same or a little less on.

Setting up as per my recent lessons but adding the "brush, brush, chip" rehearsal and shot technique off went the little pw; the ball landed on the green and agonizingly slowly over the last couple of feet trundled up to the hole. I swear the damn thing stopped, looked in and thought about it before gravity took over and in it went for the birdie.

If confidence in new techniques is vital for them to work then that sure helped

As ever thanks to you all for the help and support.

Now, why am I blocking those drives?

      Re: Basic chipping\pitching technique

Well done. I had a good day yesterday too playing 3 shots under my handicap. I started off putting from the fringe and just outside but found myself 3 putting nearly every time. I didn't use the chip as still not confident. But later it was obvious the putting from that distance did not work. So, I tried the chipping technique later in the round and did much better I had most from same distance down in 2. I found that I had to concentrate on my backswing. Before, it was too long resulting in me being too strong all the time.

          Re: Basic chipping\pitching technique

as an aside, it is unfortunate that most public courses, at least around where I am do not allow chipping on to a practice putting green. I guess they are afraid of the liability, but it is a problem.

We have got one green where you can chip to at our course. However, it is useless for me I am afraid. I messed up so many today, I feel like banging my head on a brick wall. I think that I need to do more practise swings and concentrate more. I am driving well, and using the fairway woods OK. But around and on the green today.........rubbish.

              Hi Bri
if your chipping is bad on a said day then go back to your putting shot. think of the chip as a long putt. use your putting stroke, it will at least put you on the green.
that what i do when my feel for chipping goes or the wind so bitter my fingers are numb.
it just another shot to have in your bag you can use when otherthing dont work.
              all the best

                Re: Basic chipping\pitching technique

Hello Bill. I will do that. I have to do something. I feel that I am letting members of the site down. i have had lots of good tips and some days I have had great improvement. So will have to resort to my putting stroke on bad days. I didn't really get my head around it today. Had one or two upsets before I got to the course. And it seems if I am not on full concentration this is the first of my game to go!

                  Re: Basic chipping\pitching technique

                  Hi Bri
i think having your head right before you even step on the course is a big must if you want consistancy. for about two year's i play a tape in the car on the 30 minuet drive to the course. its just a repeat of someone from "Tour Tempo" saying:- one. two, swing. over and over.
by the time i get to the couse and have sorted my clubs and put my golf shos on etc. i get to the first tee with the timing for my swing still in my head. i have a few swings to the timing still in my head and then play.
what i find is that i swing a little slower but it only feels slower. without the tape i always try and swing to fast to get a few extra yard. i find i do this without really thinking about it. with the tape and the timing it has me in time on the first and if i start well i play well.
if you turn up and you have worries and there running the back of your mind i think it harder to play well.
i know you have improved a great deal in the last year. it will get even better but you need to work at it and also play to what your good at,
if your chipping bad then try and find a way around it and to play a shot that works if not puting you near the flag then at least lets you putt.
if driving bad then stop trying to hit the skin of the ball and look to just put it 200 yards up the middle. play to 1 over each hole and you'll find the par threes are now par 4 and easy. par 5 are par 6s and easy too.
if playing of a handicap then playing a few shots over can still get you round having a good day out. hit a few 6 and 7s and your day goes down hill fast. its when in trouble and trying to hit the shot you have never tried before or only hit 3 out 100 times that kill you. play the 7 iron on the fairway and lose a shot insead of losing 3 shots.
it will come with time. don't try to get there to fast and forget what you have learned.
                  sll the best
                  Bill

Good tips Bill. That tape sounds very useful. How do you get hold of something like that?
