It's judging the 10 to 12 footer correctly is my problem... I can easily be 4 foot short or 4 foot long - which can leave a testy 2nd shot. As with most people my third putt is generally a tap in. But it's still a three putt...

Anyway - I will seriously work on my putting and aim to break the 36 putts as soon as I can...
I'm almost certain that at one point this site had a putting drill, but I can't seem to find it now.

It was something like using tees to mark the length of your backswing and using only the length of the backswing to control the distance.

You were to put a tee something like 3 inches behind the ball, and then another tee 2" further back and yet another 2 more inches back. Then swing the putter back to the level of the first tee and 'let it drop', then the second tee and then the third tee and take notice of the distance the ball rolls - let's say 3 feet, 5 feet and 7 feet just as an example.

You should be able to get the same distances by swinging the putter back to the same level over and over again (within quite small margins).

If you can get used to 3-4-5 different lengths of backswing and the gap between the distances of the roll of the ball, then 'all you need to do' (yeah, right!) is to drop by the practice green before every round to get a good feel of the speed of the greens on that day, and mentally adapt the distances.

So if on practice day, you get 3', 5' and 7' consistently, and on match day you get 2', 3½' and 5', then you'll know that to get 7' out on the course, you need to pull back to somewhere 'between the 4th and 5th (virtual) tee'.

Do that, and you won't miss by more than a few inches.

I'm really sorry if the above sounds confusing, and I wish I could find that drill so you could read the correct explanation. I really took the number of 3 putts down for me (Now all I need is to stop pushing the ball right - *sigh*).

      Hi Mox,

I'm pretty sure it's on Greg's site. In fact, here it is. The putting lesson.

Yup - that is exactly the one. Thanks!

It's a brilliant drill for distance practice.

            Re: Putting stats

I'm looking forward to giving this a try - the drill looks simple but seems to be very effective.

I'm also looking forward to actually having some sort of a game plan when I'm walking up to a 10 or 13 or 22 foot putt. Up to now when I'm stepping onto the green I'm looking for the uphill/downhill and left to right etc., but I've never had an overall plan or method in my head to actually focus on - to attack the hole...

I know this thread will be long dead by the time (if I ever) I hit 35 putts in a round - but I promise to post it and thank everyone for the constructive advice... Hopefully the 35 will be part of an overall figure like 85...

              I'm around a 13 handicap and usually hit b/w 30-35 putts

Good grief, you had a 15.5 handicap when you *started*?

                  Hi folks,

Nice to see you all here and still enjoying this great game,

I was practicing today on our putting green at my golf club and an old friend of mine started setting up to practice next to me. I was fascinated by the way he set out his practice routine and watched in amazement at the regularity of how he holed out over 10 foot, he would putt without missing the hole until he could not get another ball in the hole because he filled it up.

I then checked out the set up and have now developed my putting around this one routine.
I have put the photos and small mpeg on my ftp hope you can see how it is done with practice and repetition you will no doubt be a better putter given just a small amount of time.

You will see that the pegs laid out, are about 5 inches in front of the putter face, they are the exact same distance apart as the putter head.

You will at first hit the pegs left or right but with a smooth accelerated stroke you will glide through impact of the golf ball and on through the centre of the pegs and will sink the putt near each time, that is if you have given it the right pace to reach the hole.

Please check out my photo and small avi.

I may have posed this twice ? sorry if that is the case... but still a good practice setup

                    Re: Putting stats

Cliff, if I could make a suggestion - place another set of tees about 3 inches ahead of and behind the ball parallel with the tees that are in place. This will ensure your path is square well before and after you strike the ball.

Gord may have a good point here, but I'm wondering if it won't make the drill too tricky??

I've seen Vijay Singh doing the drill exactly as described by Cliff.

                        Re: Putting stats

That's the way I always do my drill. But instead of using tees, I use balls leaving just a bit of room on each side (about 1/4 inch).

                          Re: Putting stats

Keeping the tee pegs to the size of the putter width will show you your intended path after you strike the ball. This feedback is essential when trying to understand direction and control while under pressure of making a putt. Small adjustments to alignment are all that is needed to set up your perfect putting action.

When I used this set up I found it unrestricting, if you should happen to clip one of the tee pegs after the strike, it will not only confirm the direction you are swinging the putter on, it will show up with the direction of the ball.

Correcting the club alignment so that you clip both tee pegs after you strike the golf ball will insure a square ball strike, an often perfect roll.

I have used more tee pegs in the past but any deflection prior to making contact with the ball will not give you the feedback required to centre the putt through impact and beyond.

Thanks for the drill, I will try...

I try different exercice this year :

                            - Put tees on the putting green at one meter off the hole, then try to putt the more successive putts... like Phil in this picture :
                            http://golf.is.free.fr/golf_is_free/...&image_id=1293

My personnal record is 30 ; it's not very good, but i hope improve it !

                            - Same exercice than the first one but at 2 meters off the hole.

                            - One exercice with tees at 1,5 meters, 3 meters, and 4,5 meters off the hole ; when you putt 3 succesive putts on the first level, you must putt 3 successive on the second... if you don't realise 1 putt / 3 at a level, you must comme back to the precedent level....
I didn't succed on this exercice (succed on 3 putts at 4,5 meters), but it's a good one to improve th putting game.

On the course, i realise 31 to 37 putts, but to improve putting, it's neccessay to improve also the long game and chipping...

                            Hope it helps !
