  • I shot my best round ever Last weekend and now i can't hit anything, irons, driver, wedges period.

I've always had trouble with slicing my driver. I take all the advice playing partners give me but it doesn't work. I have a 9.0 driver with a High kick shaft and i still manage to hit every thing sky high and slice it with not much distance.

I also can't hit my irons worth a darn anymore. I've lost a lot of distance on the straight shots and all the other shots and dub or chunk or something bad.

I've been looking into lessons but haven't started any yet.

    Any advice would be great.

    Thanks in advance.

As mention on other posts, if your balls are going sky high, your left wrist is breaking down at the impact point and your are uplofting your clubs. The slice comes from an outside to inside swing. My guess is your are casting from the top and pulling the club across the target line forcing the left wrist to breakdown and uploft at impact. Until you get lessons try the following
        1) check your grip - see the lesson section here
        2) shorten your backswing to help you control the club more
        3) Get your hands through first - so the hands are ahead of the clubhead
        4) Put a shoebox about 1-2 inches outside the ball parallel to the target line - don't hit the box
        5) Aim for the inside quarter of the ball.

I'm sorry about your malady, but your post is encouraging.

In addition to msklar92's suggestions, I would add to check your spine angle. I think this is often overlooked. While it is not the cure-all, having a good spine angle and maintaining it throughout the swing is critical.

Also, make sure you follow through completely. I find that when I start to lose making good contact, I start punching at the ball and fail to follow through with my belt buckle facing the target when I complete the swing.

            • Guys I have had a slice since I started playing the game of golf and was wondering how come when I face my back to the target almost as if I was going to hit the ball way to right at setup I end up hitting a nice draw believe it or not? I think that's weird.

In the second case, you have completed the shoulder turn and are setup to hit the ball from inside the target line. When you slice, there is probably a lack of shoulder turn and you come from outside to inside the target line with an open club face. Hope this helps, mike

I think what you are doing is keeping your back to the target as you swing down. Because if you were square you would come OTT, by setting up so far right it is compensating for the OTT move as you are still coming OTT but you are so closed you are hitting a gentle pull whilst aiming right

If you set up square and try and feel like as you start down your back stays facing the target for as long as you can you would get the same feeling. Rather than throwing the upper body and shoulders forwards and throwing the club OTT

Believe it or not that is a drill for the slice that makes you hit a draw. Slow down and try to try to time your swing, to where the clubface is square at inpact.

                      • I have tried to work on a full backswing and work my hips but I slice the ball worse. I can 3/4 swing with power on the downswing and slice like a boomerrang. An instructor told me to try the 3/4 swing rotating hips with my downswing power and lost some slice but alot of distance. What next!

                        • I have developed a slice with the driver, and began to incorporate a drill into my practice routine by setting my driver outside of my ball, and then swinging in to hit the ball. I believe that this will help eliminate the "over the top" chronic problem that I have had. Any truth to this?

in my relative newcoming to this damnable but addicting sport, i have always had an ugly slice (or maybe a push?) off the tee...non playable for that matter as it goes 90 degrees to the right after first bounce so even compensating by facing 45 degrees left is of little help (makes for ****py day of playing up the opposing fairways)...anyway, i was lamenting this fact to a friend at work who regularly shoots in the low 80's (in my dreams) and he mentioned that i should try to set my stance w/the ball at the heel of the driver ( i think this is what you are refering to) and my right foot about a half a foot length behind the left....low and behold...much of the slice disappeared from my next bucket of balls...i need to go out again and see if it is repeatable science, or just the alignment of planets that day...good luck in your search for a straighter drive...bg
