  • What Kind of Player Are You?

I have just been playing two years with a handicap now down to 14.8. I'm asking this question because when I go out by myself I get paired with people who say they are just there "to enjoy being outdoors" and could care less how they play and usually are extremely slow players. I like to shoot good scores everytime I go out regardless if it a practice round alone or with friends or tournament play. I take every round seriously and I think this is why I improved fairly quickly. I just told myself I did not want to be like some people who have played 5 or 10 years with no improvement. If I want to just "enjoy outdoors" I will take my kids to the park not the golf course. Is anyone else here like this? I really enjoy playing with other golfers who are serious about their game regardless of skill level.

I'm actually working on not letting others effect my game.

That said, I played 'speed routine' last time out and shot a tidy 90 (not bad for a 23 capper!). I need some more practice time, but I had 'Brandt Snedeker at Augusta' as my model for the last round.

Interesting that in your experience its an "either or" situation.

I play pretty much exclusively social golf because its a great way to enjoy being out doors chatting with my mates AND we take our golf extremely seriously until the last putt is sunk then we go and sink a few beers.

My regular golfing partner and I both play quite quickly, of the walk up and hit it then walk after it and hit again school, which means that in a 4 hour round there's a lot of time to relax, enjoy the scenery and natter away.

So as well as social / serious lets expand the question to Trevino / Strong Silent; talkers or not?

Re: What Kind of Player Are You?

There's a time and a place for serious in all competitive and club-based rounds.

Between shots ain't serious. Forget your last one. Walk. Chat. Laugh.

Approaching the ball on your next shot is time to be serious again. If anybody's serious for 4 hours they'll give themselves a headache, and won't be much fun to play alongside.

Also, respect those who wish to take it seriously during their routines. If a person does not wish to take the game seriously, they must also respect their playing partners who do, but it's only necessary a minute before each shot.

Then you get those totally non-competitive rounds with your mates when you spend the first 12 holes playing seriously, everybody ends up screwing their round up, then the last 6 holes is a riot of laughter all the way cos nobody cares too much anymore! They're really fun rounds!

Re: What Kind of Player Are You?

10 years ago when my handicap hit 13, i marked my practice balls with the number 4, because that was my goal handicap. I now play off 5 and still have the number 4 marked on my practice balls. Every time i play i go out to shoot the best score i can on that day. I do take it pretty seriously, like everything i have done i like to be best at whatever it is i can be and each year have set my self a target to get to by Christmas. Those targets were quite easily achievable when i was play in the teens but obviously are harder once you play off single figures and sometimes do not happen. Before you all think i am a nut case while i am playing with a fairly regular group each Saturday we also play scats, sledge each other (all in good fun) buy a jug if we dont get it past the ladies off the tee and buy a round of beers at the end of it all. As well as taking it seriously it is my release on a Saturday after a week at work and gives me a chance to catch up with my mates at the golf club. Golf is a disease not a sport for all the right reasons.

            hi
i find its impossible to concentrate on golf for 4 1/2 hours but its quiet easy to to do it for two or 3 minuets at a time. i find that i switch of to what around and concentrate on my shot, then it back to chatting to my friends.
if playing if a medal round then i do not chat very much as i pace out each shot and it hard to chat and count out the distant to your ball.
            cheers
            bill
