A natural tendency to return the end of the shaft to the ball. In most sports where an object is used to strike a ball the hitting area is in line with the wrist (Tennis, squash, badminton, baseball, cricket, etc) The clubface of the golf club is offset and some people have a problem with the alignment.

Fanning the clubface open on the way back, and keeping it there on the downswing (leaving only the hosel to hit with).

An exaggerated out side in swing coupled with a poor pivot, and a quick wrist action. There's three issues right there. A poor grip causing an incorrect start of the down swing, and /or a poor position at the top. Then there is a back swing that is taken too far inside from the start. Once a shank shows up then the golfer's mind goes haywire which prevents a ready cure for the problem. There are more swing issues that will cause a shank I am sure. What makes a shanking issue so bad is that more than few of these problems are all working together at the same time to cause this swing issue. Usually the prelude to shanking for a golfer is one who starts pulling their shots. Most golfers fix their pulled shot problem before it reaches the shank stage. A one piece take away, with a one piece down swing is a good place to start to correct this problem. As I have posted before on curing shanks, the main thing to remember is that suicide is not an option.........GJS

Weight too far back on the heels. Then rocking forward on the downswing. Weight on heels can also make you suck the club too far in on the back swing, then forcing you to swing OTT which can also cause a ...a...cause a...just can't bring myself to say it..the shot we are talking about...lol

I hit a shank if my hips outrun my hands. When that happens I slow the hips down so that the turn and that of the hands (with the club) coming through are synchronised.

Getting your body ahead of the ball as you come into impact, this leaves the clubface wide open exposing the hozel to the ball.

lagging the hozel instead of the sweetspot. As you come down towards impact the hozel will be leading the sweetspot due to a lack of release in the wrists.

Phew! There are a lot of causes for this insidious shot

And what about video drills? i think my hands get trapped on the downswing between body and ball and im losing my balance

oh and whats a good drill to help you swing in sync and rotate the club on the way through??????????

I'll tell you what causes a shank....

...hitting your drive of the day and having an easy pitch shot from the fairway to a wide open green/pin placement...

...invariably OB will be on the right for a right hander and left for the lefties...
