One the one hand a good description of how I played yesterday but also a reasonably serious question.

As I started the back 9, having pushed my tee shot oob, I reloaded with a ball grabbed quickly from my bag and smacked one straight down the middle with a 10-20yd increase in distance over what I'd been getting so far. The 9 iron approach had a great trajectory and shape and did a little hop and skip stopping to leave a Dennis Wise for the birdie - which I missed

Ok, so the Pro V1-x is a good ball. However for someone as inconsistent as me its not a sound economic proposition, this one was a slightly worse for wear "pick up" - a bit like some girls I know - that I lost on the 18th.

The question then is which non-premium price (I'm not really a cheap skate ,honest) comes nearest to v1x characteristics?

    Robin,

I read a detailed set of ball tests in Today's Golfer recently and the Pinnacle Platinum came out very well for distance and short game spin. I normally play the Srixon AD333 which is a very good performing ball at a reasonable price.

      Re: Balls

      hi
i agree with Brian the Pinnacle is a very good ball for the price.
i like to use top flight (T) balls and also are good value.
i think its about trying a few balls to find one that gives you the hight of flight and the amount of spin on the green.
its a trade off between distance and spin. i find that the pro v1 gives to much spin on the greens and you never know how much the ball will spin back from a wedge shot. i find with my top flight i get less spin but a more predictable results.
      cheers

        Re: Balls

Like Brian, I also play the Srixon AD333. However, one time I had to buy a box of balls, the AD was not available. The salesman told me I should try a ball called "The Gamer" which I believe Is a Topflite product. He said ii was an economical priced 3 piece ball. I bought a dozen for under $20, and they did play pretty well. Good distance, and short game playability. You might want to give them a chance. GJS

Honestly, I'm very impressed with www.golfballselector.com. For my game it's recommended the Srixon Z URS, the Taylormade TP Black (08) and the Wilson Zip. Go Zip!

Thats a really good tool. My results came back as Taylormade TP Red and Titleist Pro v1x, neither are my preferred choice but balls I have used in the past.

                Hi Bill

Yes its been a while since I last posted on here, I haven't played too much over the winter but am starting to get back into it. Still playing off a handicap of 5 (4.5 to be exact) but hoping to drop 1, maybe 2 by the end of the year. Still playing links golf, don't think I could ever change this now, love punching 3 irons into the wind. How is your golf doing? Still as consistent as ever I bet.

                  hi Davie
good to hear you game still on top form. weather been bad the last few months and there is that cold north east wind and you feel it more on the links.
my game dropped a bit at the end of the year but that was more to do with illness, but i got down to 10 but it went back up to 12 (11.4). only had two full rounds so far and i feel i will get down to 10 again as I'm putting the ball where i want it most of the time. short game needs some work. first round 10 over and second round 8 over so getting there.
                  cheers

Check out the balls by Bridgestone. Apparently the dude hwo made these was nabbed to make the Pro V 1.

I was given some for Xmas and they are pretty good. Feel the same as a premium ball.

                        Hi Neil

I was told a similar thing so decided to try them out, I found the performance was very similar to the PRO V1 but they definitely cut up quicker and didn't last as long.

I have two suggestions for inexpensive, yet high performance, golf balls. Try the Srixon Trispeed (3 piece ball that feels like a Pro v around the greens yet gives great distance off the tee, especially for slower swing speeds). I also recommend the Spalding Topflite 2 Feel. Apparently when this ball went to the testers for Callaway they thought it was meant to be the tour ball. The Srixon ball is about $25.00 for 12 while the Spalding is about $20.00 for 15. Give them a try.

That D2 Feel (green box in N. America) is a pretty good ball. Doesn't spin like a urethane ball, but is great for the money.
