Hi Greg
i still use a 360cc smaller head driver so i can hit of the fairway and still catch the sweet spot and its great on links where you get a lot of run on windy days. with the 460cc drivers the sweet spot is to high up the face i'm not sure you would get the ball up enough to get any distance, i think it would be the same if trying to chip with the 460cc. the sweet spot just to high up the face.

Yes, we all use different clubs, but the survey is if you have a favorite...

I chip with a number of the shorter clubs too. This probably sounds dumb but some kind of instinct tells me which club I'd comfortably like to use on different chips-can't explain it.
However, my Ping I5 irons have a "U" (utility?) club which I seem to prefer-don't know the degree of loft but it works well ...Wil

Hi Wil,

The Ping "U" is their "A" or Gap Wedge, so is in the realm of 52 degrees, plus-minus a degree, or so.

your Ping I5 U wedge is 50 degree and your P/wedge is 46 degrees and your s/wedge is 54 degree. so it it set nicely between the p/w and the s/w.
the 9 iron is a 42 degree and the go down in 4 degrees to the 7 iron and 3 1/2 degrees to the 5 iron and then 3 degrees down to the 2 iron.
the older pings had the p/wedge at 47 degrees and the s/wedge at 52 degrees.
my U wedge is 56 degrees as i have the older 47 degree p/wedge and the 52 degree s/wedge.

All depends: distance from the green, how much roll I want, how fast the green is, etc.
I have used everything from a 9 iron to sand wedge depending on the type of shot I want to create.

I understand the question but no one would answer just one club because there are many circumstances where a good player will use one over another.
I'm sure you would not use your SW for every shot so by saying its your favorite you may mean you like the club but in reality you like any club that produces the shot desired.

As a high handicapper, I would always use either a 53 or 58 degree wedge. This was always commented on by my playing partner, he's been playing the game 30yrs plus, so I take his advice on board.

He would always say " why use more loft than needed " my clubs of choice are now either a 7 or 9 iron. It's remarkable how many shots I've saved around the greens since ditching my wedge's.

I no longer duff, or thin a chip shot, as I would using my wedge's, and now get more of a chip and run shot. It's worked wonders!!!

There are of course times when I need to use a more lofted club, but I think my confidence has grown, and when faced with a more difficult shot, I just keep down on it and commit to it.

i play a lot of links golf and using a 5 iron it a great club for chip and run. on links courses the fairways are so good there almost like a putting green and i have even used a 3 iron, Like Keiko said. it depends on how much run you need and if you want a high shot that drops and runs little run or on links golf when your better playing under the wind and need more run and less hight. i think you use more clubs for chipping on links than inland as the fairways run so much better on links and it easer to get close to the pin.

Voted for all since it was nearest choice.

If I need a lot of run, especially on a long apron, I use my Hogan Radial 7 iron. If half'n'half, I use equalizer (50*) or gap wedge if playing my wilsons. If shortsided with a bunker or big patch of gnarly in between, the lob wedge.

I've decided that if I'm carrying my wilsons, I'll take my radial 7 for chipping. In fact, for some reason, I don't like the Wilson 7 so maybe I'll leave it home permanently.

9 iron does me because the most you can miss a green by and still have a flat shot to a green round my course is about 30 feet and the longest chip you can have is maybe 3 times that length, 9 iron is perfect for landing it halfway and letting it roll for the whole range between 30 and 90 feet for me. I putt from under 30 feet and the only time I use something else is when its under 30 feet and I cant putt because of a bit of fringe or some light rough, in that situation I use a hybrid or a fairway wood with a putting stroke.

7 iron. I got tired of coming up short when using a SW or PW. I saw Hale Irwin lesson video and he recommended a 7 or 8 iron. I adopted this and stuck with it and it really helped me this year.

Just a follow up from a previous post in this thread. For the past couple of months I have been using a tht Cleveland Niblick 37* club in place of my normal 8i. Well as of a few days ago, the Niblick club has been retired, and I am back playing my regular 8i. The Niblick is not a bad club, but the weight issue is what caused me grief, with my other clubs. It's very heavy when compared to the rest of the scoring clubs in my bag. Although that Niblick club played well for me, the weight issue sealed it doom as far as my bag make up goes. I am back using my regular 8i for chipping.

In a series of trials using a dozen or more players from the English Amateur squad it was found that the 9 iron (followed closely by the 8) was consistently the best club for all distances. This was as true for players who normally used only one club and those who normally varied depending on distance.
There were exceptions (eg for when the flag was tight behind a greenside bunker) but the trial was mainly concerned with clear shots of various lengths to different distances on the green.

The tests have been repeated with squads from various Counties (ie the next level down but still + handicappers).
