    Re: blown it again

You have to learn how to score properly. That comes from experience and achieving scoring goals. Once you score say 5 over, the next time it's easier to do it and when you break par, the next time it is easier ...

There is a certain mind set you need to be able to play one shot at a time and that mind set doesn't come quickly or easily I'm afraid. There are things you can do to speed up the learning process and to make the learning more effective but either way, it takes time.

Competition play is VERY different from playing a singleton and knocking a score together. Despite what a lot of people say, competition and handicap rounds need special attention.

Everyone has bombed out at some time or another. I've also scored a 10 in tournament play and a whole lot of 8's and 9's too ... they happen. It's how you deal with them and learn from them.
Also remember you've come down from scoring like a 16-handicap to scoring like a 7 or 8 handicap in no time. Those bad swing habits are not out of the system yet and that consistency is not 100% there yet. As a 7 or 8 handicap your bad shots are far better than your bad shots as a 16 handicapper, but from time-to-time you'll hit a 16-handicap shot and that will cost you.

You need to give yourself time. It's too soon to expect to score like a 7 or 8 handicap every time. Okay??

Your just wanting to play to good, and expect too much and thinking about the shot to much, maybe?

You might be out the comp but not out of scoring in a competition environment and learn from the experience.

Sometimes you have to N/R. I've N/R'd a few times too and like you I lost a ball in the trees and wasn't going to walk all the way back ... I was 7 or 8 over by then anyway and it wasn't going to count into my handicap rounds because the 6 that counted were all around scratch.

But look at the bright side, when you turn pro you won't have to worry about handicaps!!!!!!!

100% correct. We all know how well we can play and when we don't play well, our world falls apart! Been there and done that more times than I can think of!

How's your pre-shot routine Ricky? The nicest thing about a good preshot routine is that it allows you to focus only on your current shot.

Maybe you need to include some positive self talk during your preshot.

Ricky, I think it was Sam Snead said something like "You always swing different with a score card in your pocket." Try not to think too much about your score. Play one hole at a time. Remember you are out there to enjoy yourself. Good Luck. D

                  Ricky,

Hmmmmmm.................I have read your thread and all the answers, however you do say two things in your origional thread, quote 1 over after five, 5 over after nine..etc...etc...

There is no doubt in my mind that you are counting every shot as you play them....big mistake.
When you were one over after five your happy, then you drop one then another all over sudden you start trying harder....big mistake.
Then I bet you start thinking your swings falling apart...the mind starts trying to control the swing step by step through the swing.....before you know it 10.....

Try and play a few rounds with a bit more carefree attitude and only count you score after each nine or better still after eighteen, once you do this a couple of times you will loose your score after a few holes and then you can play each shot at a time.

Don't get down on yourself every golfer on this site or any other has scored a few 10s and completley blown a round.

It's a good golfer who has a 10 on his card and finishes with a couple of birdies ever though his card is ruined.

                  Cheer up

                  Ian.

I think donauu has a point as well, all people start to play different when they have a card, and when they do a bad hole they just keep thinking aboou that card!

                      Re: blown it again

Ricky, the ten would have gone back to a six, if you dropped 4 shots at the end of the front nine, thats where your score went, not the 10, remember under stableford correction for counting scores the worst you can do is a double bogey. Were you more than 4 shots outside your buffer zone, if so the 10 wasnt the cause. Everyone has nightmares (I had an 18 on the 10th in one medal !!!) you have to accept them and remember that even if you shot a big number on one hole you can still salvage a round.

Try and work on your course management in practice from now on as well. You can still score well if you arent hitting the ball well if you can think your way round a course better.

Stick in, the scores will come.......

                      D.

                        Re: blown it again

I've had the luxury of playing with a caddie (my brother came for a walk around the course with me - deciding whether or not to start playing), and kept my score for me.

It's amazing how well you play when you don't have to think of the score.

I've tried a couple of methods, and they both work well. Method one is to carry a rosary style counter. Just before each shot, you pull a bead. I do it as I grab my club. Then settle in and swing. After the hole, count your beads. My kids have a bead set, (strings and beads), and I tried making 18 counters. It got a little confusing, but my score was great, as I didn't have to even count beads until the round was done.

The other thing to do is (as others have said) not count strokes. I simply count my overall score. So if I go bogey bogey par bogey, I'm +3 over 4. By the same token, however, I'm never trying to beat a score. I only play to see how I'm playing that day.

                          IT WAS ABSOLUTELY BRUTAL TODAY.............

                          I open on hole # 7: water my 2nd.......go on to make a 7

8 i chip in for the birdie

                          9 i chunk a wedge and bogey

                          1 i chunk 2 wedges and bogey

                          2 i chunk a 3i and a wedge....double bogey

3 i finally step up and par

4 i chunk a wedge almost chip in par

5 i chunk a drive that i try to rip, bogey

I come to hole 6 which is an easy par 5 i think ok a bird will put me at 43 and a bit of hope for tomorow........i didnt know what was about to happen

6 is the second worst hole of my career.........par 5.....really short now because the tees are off the normal boxes.........dogleg left.........water hazard left.......i try to fade through the gap around the corner.......bad contact....perfect fade.....into the water.....drop........into the water.......hitting 5 from 150 out.....hit behind a shed........hit out from behind it.......pitch on........3 put for the double par 10........shoot a 49 in the round........brutal.....thats a 98.....ouch

go three feet from the hole sink 10 putts in a row........do that on all four sides.....move out to 5 fee and sink 8 in a row.......you learn to be more consistent........it can be frustrating if you miss on 7 on the 5 footers!!
