To get an official handicap you need to submit five cards to your club handicapper. These cards should be for rounds played under competition conditions and be signed by a marker. This will probably take you a bit of time.
If the event you are playing in is a sort of one off social event then the handicapping system used and the handicap given to you is up to the organisers. There are a number of systems used to calculate a handicap for a one off event. The Callaway system is probably the most popular of these.
