Re: HOW TO SHOOT IN THE LOW 80,s

    Hi chess.
    Well done mate.
Even though my thread failed you , it still succeded. For the simple reason, you know exactly what weaknesses stopped you from breaking into the eighties( maybe bunker shots). Now you have a clear picture of what you have to do to achieve your goal.

    have faith chess my friend.

Re: HOW TO SHOOT IN THE LOW 80,s

      Dear Aftford,

Thanks for the reply. It was good to hear your "take" on this. I was remiss in not mentioning one other thing. After using this method, it made me think about how I could play other courses and especially certain holes.

My point is this, when there are "tight" holes and the holes are 350 Yards or less they are very much in striking distance and I need not fear hitting the Big Dog, because I am absolutely confident that I can get very close to the green with only my 5-iron and then a 7-iron. Believe me, I will use that newfound knowledge to my advantage.

Another thing is, I have a hybrid club and I can hit it to the tune of 200 yards 99% of the time. I will use it more off the tee and I know that it will save me from the woods, lakes, you know...all that stuff.

      A very thought provoking thread....

Re: HOW TO SHOOT IN THE LOW 80,s

        hi chess.
        a very honest reply.

i play off 1 and haven't used the big dog in years.
All i can ever do is plant a seed and then it's up to you to propogate it.

        good luck .

i know this will work for you , i can tell by your replies that you are willing to put in the hard work and perseverance it takes to succede.

Re: HOW TO SHOOT IN THE LOW 80,s

          Hi Chessbum and everybody,

My hcp is just under 20 and I play everyday. This is my second month, though. ...And this month I will start using my driver. But not to score - just let some steam out. If my round is going well, I will open with 3 or 5 wood. I have been thinking about opening with irons too.

For me, I can shoot straight with fairway woods - just long as I don't try to hit long. So it's not so much about long, short Irons or woods - it's about keeping my thought together and not trying too much.

I like to approach a green with Irons. I do not so much roll on the ball with Irons. With woods balls tend to roll to the bunkers.

I would not judge an approach by just one round. I tend to have days that irons just don't work and then other days that shots take of just like in television:-)

Re: HOW TO SHOOT IN THE LOW 80,s

Played the Hearsal Golf club in Coventry with friends £35 for the hole day 18 in the morning and 18 afternoon not bad the course is't very big no holes need a driver.

Now i started this with driver in mind and played the full 18 apart from par3s with it, needless to say found more trees than fair ways plus good drives found bunkers and some water that run across fairways now i shot a 96 witch is poor for this course.

Then after something to eat and a cup of tea set off on the same course for 18.

Started with a 5i found the middle of the fair way played an 8i to the green, just off chipped a 7i to the hole, ran past then 2 putts boggy.
Did the same with the rest of the 18 with different irons but no driver except on i think it was the 9th were i took two 3woods to a par5 (because i just wanted to) made a par anyhow. in the end made an 81 big difference.

Now i'm not saying I won't use the driver again not at all what i will say is i read this thread 4 what it is,just asking 4 us to play a few rounds with irons no big deal, now i have been takeing lessons for years with the same pro and he has got me hitting a good ball most of the time and i can also hit a fair drive but i do struggle with the game i not a natural at it and it can sometimes be a pain when u try so hard and get little reward.

The last week has been an enjoyable test to find out although we love our drivers to bits and will never part me from mine (in fact i'm buying a new 1 at the moment) sometimes just sometime leave it in the bag if u want to lower your scores.

            ps.sorry 4 rambling on

PPS Just my own view but i don't think there is any better way of playing good golf and wantingto lower ur scores than getting help from a pro in stead of paying £200+ for drivers or£400+ for iron sets pay £100 for ten lessons it will help.

Someone a while back mentioned about they would rather play like Els, but I think that the above qoute is playing like ELs and Tiger rather then pulling out the driver on every hole. Thay are very selective when they hit Driver, I would guess on most courses and rounds it is less then 50% of the time for the par 4's. It would be interesting to see stats of the various pros on how often they hit driver.

Re: HOW TO SHOOT IN THE LOW 80,s

Played yesterday, front nine so so, then for the back 9 I tried a variation of this - teeing off with a rescue club rather than an iron.

4 pars, a bogey and 2 doubles which - 5 over for those 7 holes - is fine for some one with my high handicap.

Unfortunately I couldn't bring myself to do the same on two of the Par 5's, both into a heavy wind and tried far too hard hence the 9 and the 8! [Rubbish drive, even worse attempt at a big recovery and a rushed fluff before I calmed down].

Even if the score card didn't show it this time I think I might just persevere with this idea.

                  hi bdbl
i used this system today while playing GTO member TPG9165. I used nothing higher than a 7 iron also PW,SW and putter . Found that he outdrove me on the par 5 and he also hit the green on his second shot.
it took me 3 shots to hit the green but i 1 putted to win the hole.
good to know so many people are still using this system in one form or another.
                  cheers folks.......

i remember back in the late 70 lee trevino and seve ballesteros playing St Andrews with only a 5 iron in a one club challage, putted with the 5 iron too and seve shot a 71 and lee a 72 if i remember right, did not play of the back tees but the ones we would use, again both were wonderfull craftmens with there clubs. i have tried this on holidasy when i did not want to carry a full set of clubs and it works and you feel more relaxed too

                      Hi Bill.
you are correct and remember it well.Seve even managed to play out of one of those coffin bunkers.
Seve and Lee are two of most talented people i have ever seen shake a stick.

                      great post bill

                        Hi

Very interesting thread im a 20 handicapper and usually shoot around 90 so very tempted to give this a try!

Slater just out of curiosity what sort of score would you normally hit using all clubs, driver off T etc...

If its usually around 90 that truly is a stonking improvement, well worth a go!

                        Cheers

                          Jamin.
If you look at the early posts in this thread you will see that the last score posted by slater, before trying this system, was 104.
So you see it was a truly amazing transformation. Slater still uses this system but i think he has modified it slightly to suit his game but when he first tried it , it was in the true spirit of this thread.

All i can say is , just give it a go.

                          cheers

                            Hi aftford,

I agree with your thread. I have done this last year in most holes (in a Tournament) out of fear of OBs and broke 80 (78, 79)twice. I tried it again this past weekend - after losing balls the last few weeks with erratic driver shots - and played nothing longer than 4 Iron and shot 80 from the blues (6600 yards). But my question is, what is the next step. I dont think one can get any lower without picking up a few birdies, which require wedge on approach, which in turn requires long tee shots - on most holes. How did you get down to 1 h'cap!!!

my 3 previous scores were 99,99 and 104 really lost my way with driver killing my game being "3 off the tee" all the time
i have modified aftfords approach i carry 3wood,23deg hybrid,7i,pw,sw and putter because they are the clubs i hit consistently well. if the 3wood goes off the boil i dont use it again that round!
give it a go mate youve have nothing to lose and lots to gain

                                Hi pal.
First of all congratulations on such low scores. Secondly thank you for trying this system and giving feedback, threads like this cannot work without feedback.

Now, as for question where do i go from here , i'm afraid you will have to wait until weekend , by which time my next thread should be ready. It looks at ways you can take it further, how to monitor your progress and spot your weaknesses. i have been working on the next thread for over a week, and i think there will be food for thought for everybody.

                                cheers pal and thanks again
