  • Driver takes Backseat

    Folks,

The driver took the back seat. So did the 3 wood. Call it what ever you want...chickened out or swallowed the ego. I played just irons(4 and up) this weekend. Just so that I have a second shot. And I did. Played the blues(not long, only 6600 yards) but stayed on the fairway 8 times, GIR 9 times, 1 birdie, 31 Putts and shot 80. The best this year. Took the advice from the forum(Ian) that play for bogeys on long par 4s and I did. It worked out OK. It gave me the confidense on the tee to swing freely. Conservative strategy:Cocky swing, Bob Rotella would say. Next step is to get the 3 Wood in the game....

I always hear/read that the swing between the Iron and Wood are the same. Just the change in ball position. But then should the shaft flex be the same in both?

Yeah I really think it helps a persons course management to play a few rounds with just Irons (so you know your capabilities and all your options to make par)and it sure helps scoring if the only clubs you pull from the bag are ones your confident in hitting.

As for ball position, I think there is a debate wether you should change the position of the ball at all, some say yes others recomend always playing the ball off your left heal (and only change it if your trying to play a low shot), just change how close you stand as well as how much you bend from the waste. I guess personal preference and results should dictate what you do.

As for flex, I think that your clubs should have similar flex throughout the bag, (which does not mean that they have to be labeled the same flex) the only exception maybe are your wedges. I know some of the pros will have less flex on them simply because they do not swing them as hard.

      hi pal.
All i can add to your initial question is: try to use a flex that denotes your overall swing speed. I.E stiffer flex for faster swings and more regular flex for slower swing speeds. Try to find a wood that is the same the flex of your irons.

      cheers pal.
