I watched the open and was very impressed as always with Tiger's game.
I saw in the post match interview that he said that on the practice range he was hitting his driver over 400 yds and therefore he could not control the ball filght accurately enough over that distance.
400 yds ? geez.. I am glad to get over 200, shows how much of a novice I am.

I did find the end very emotional, seeing such a strong determined guy reduced to tears like that, winning his first major since the death of his father showed just how brilliantly he played in spite of all the emotions building up within him.

Hope it isn't too long before he catches and beats Nicklaus' record for Open wins.

If i live to be a very old manI swear i will never witness such single minded, accurate golf that i witnessed this week.

I hear you loud and clear mate,
I just got done playing today on a tight course that measures 6800 yards, I hit driver a total of 4 times off the tee and I hit my 1 or 2 iron hybrid a total of 10 times. I was playing for a little cash and the guy I was playing with was saying things like "scared to hit the driver" etc. Stuck to my game plan and the money I won paid for my round and I carded a 77 even though I did not feel I played all that well. for me my objective, if a hole is tight, is pick a club that will get me inside of 180. Then when the hole is open, I can just bomb away. The people I played with hit only a couple 3 woods and no irons, but their bad course managemnet is good for my financial matters

do you believe that with him winning this way he may alter his approach? I know he wont get as much roll in most other tournaments but he still hits his 2 iron pretty far off the tee and his 3 wood is more controlled then his driver

I would agree with all of your comments and like to congratulate him on winning i think he needed to very much and will be the best therapy whilst recovering from his loss. And i'm sure is dad is as proud now as he allways has been of him depending on your beliefs that is.

I am watching the highlights (having made the ultimate sacrifice and taking the kids to legoland). Decided to look at your thread and now know the results with 20 mins of highlights to go).

The lesson I have learnt is to ignore all your threads whilst watching golf!

On a serious note I agree. I played a texas scramble with a high handicapper a few weeks ago. We had to use a min of two drives of each of the four players over nine holes. On the last we are dependant on this guys drive and I knew we were in with a good chance of winning if we scored on the last.

I stood in front of him talking him down from the driver on a tight but short par four (we are good friends and some choice words were exchanged and my view of what could happen if he took his driver and what could happen if we clubbed down).

Anyway, finally talked down he took a three wood, hitting it dead straight, short of the trouble leaving a nine iron into the green. The perfect shot, giving us four attempts to get close and then four attempts at birdie.

He then hit his second to three foot, better than the rest of us. He missed the putt but the next player holed it. We won the match and he would have had an easy par if he had played on his own.

Yes, 1 out of three times he hit a 280 yard drive in play but the other 2 drives tended to be in the rough/trees/water and he struggled to make doubles/triples. If he gave up the driver for all but the very open holes he would be playing to less that 18 all the time!

Hightlights have finished - guess what........TIGER WON!

I shoud have know better than go to a golf site before seeing the result (have tried to hard not to hear the results!).

However, just to add to the observations, surely the putting played a major role. Garcia failed to hole out well today, Els the same, whereas Tiger keep the putting going today.

Tiger pays alot of attention to his putting in practice and it obviously pays off. So how many people give 30% or more of their practice to putting and how many putts do you take on average in a round?

It would be interesting to hear honest feedback on % and time spent on practicing putting and average scores and average putts in a round.

It was my own stupid fault - I enjoyed watching the way Tiger won it anyway and learnt alot.

60% of your time is spent on putting - I bet you are a rare breed, I hardly ever see anyone else on the practice green for more than ten minutes.

I know you are off +1 but I would be interested to hear how many putts you take in a round on average and how this fairs against the shots taken in other parts of your game.

I think this will show a clear difference in the way good golfers practice and the way good golfers score on the course.

The reason he used irons off the tee is that he knows that golf is a game of how many, not how far.
Being in a pot bunker after a 400yrd drive is not much fun, centre of the fairway after a 300yrd 2 iron is much better.

Im in Ireland and its bone dry over here at the moment aswell, I hit a 312m drive yesterday but luckily it stayed straight, many of them took almighty bounces all over the place...

I thought the open was so refreshing, watching Tiger plot his way round and execute fanstastic long irons. High and low, right and left

I get bored of this target golf on the US Tour. Its like an identikit course every other week. All par 4's are Driver and Wedge, Driver and Wedge. The US networks clearly love the good ol boys pounding it 350 yards with no traps and thats where the money is but yesterday took me back to the days of Seve, Faldo and Jack, shaping shots and having strategies to cope with whatever course and conditions they played. Thats why links golf is so special
