  • Out to In Swing Path

There are many postings on this site where people ask for help with what must be the most common problem in golf: AN OUTSIDE TO IN GOLFSWING that causes Slices, Hooks and Shanks. The most common cause must be an Over The Top downswing.

I would like to open a discussion on this problem so that we can generate a collection of ways to resolve it.

Here is one to start with that I once found in an article from Jack Nicklaus:

When you start your downswing imagine that your left shoulder will not move any further back towards the target, this will encourage you to bring your right shoulder down and under your chin thus stopping you from coming OTT.

    out to in path,,,ggggeaaakk!
    1) work in you downswing,
    2) work in you downswing, im still doing...lol not a easy to loose bad habit
3)practice in front of a mirror(you will see yourself at the downswing)
    4) video camera yourself down the line and front to check your progress
    5) review yourself at the drive range...most important thing to remember while you do the entirely process...HAVE FUN! amazingly humans learn (ingrain)faster when they are in happy mood!!!

      Hi Brian,

A common question indeed with many many different answers, you may be aware that I like to look at things using the mind so just hit balls with something in the way and your mind does the rest, a simple way to stop this problem is to practice hitting ball with another ball or headcover just two inches outside your ball, if you come over the top then you will hit the headcover or ball just outside your target, you must practice this for at least two sessions every week for six weeks like any other drill before it will become second nature.

I think this is a major problem people don't stick at their new routine long enough.

      Just my pennies worth.

      Ian.

Agree with above. In addition, you really need to review your setup including grip alignment and stance. This should be done under the supervision of an expert or PGA pro.

Here is a link to a good video that demonstrates the downswing and how to keep an inside path.
