  • shouder turn at the start of backswing

My game is absolutely terrible at the moment, my swing feels very "army" and I hit loads of high slices that go hardly anywhere which is so frustrating because my natural shot has always been a draw. Today I tried starting the backswing with only my arms not letting my shoulders rotate at all. You can only get so far back doing this so your shoulders have to start rotating at about half way back to let you get anywher near to the top. My contact was so much better doing this although I was in the net so I haven't seen the ball flight yet. Is this what "turning to the top is?" I've always tried to turn from the start and as a result probably end up finishing the swing with my arms. My swing felt more compact and when I looked at my swing in the mirror I saw the flying right elbow I have always had dissapeared! Is this is linked?

    Hi Samburk,

What you put into the takeaway and backswing you take back in the downswing, "with a little more at impact". If this was the case in what you are doing now you would only be using your arms through impact.

So, bearing this in mind: When you take the club away scribe a natural arc with your left arm while rotating your hands arms and shoulders to the point where the club is in line parallel with your feet, ensure you don't roll your left forearm too much, the right forearm should be slightly higher than the left at this point

Now allow your hips to rotate by around 45 deg so that the but end of the club is pointing directly at the ball.

Next allow your shoulders to rotate so that you have your back pointing to the target.

Allow your arms to carry on to the top so that you can feel the coiling between your upper torso and lower body.

Coming back you take all that back again: Arms first, then shoulders, then hips, then arms and shoulders.

The "little bit more at impact" is some additional hip rotation to clear them and a pushing through with the right side.

I played this Saturday trying this method I devised and the results were very good. I'm playing so poorly at the moment I'm trying new things every week to try and get my swing back. In the summer I was hitting my 7 iron 150 yards now its winter in the recent weeks this is more like 135. This weekend with this new swing it was back to 150 still in the cold weather! My short game was very average and I played fourball so I didnt keep a score but I reckon I palyed to my handicap for the first time in weeks.
