Maybe they are practising at the range to get better with their drivers

I have proven to myself that I can play many par 4's and 5's to par with a 5 and 7 iron, even birdy the odd one. But what the heck! a great booming drive raises the hairs on the palms of the hands and is psychologically representative to penile proportion.

      Hi Bill,

The shots that you are likely to be hitting from the rough will be recovery shots - you are unlikley to be able to go for the green therefore they are wasted shots.

Best to be on the fairway in the first place so you can go for the green - then at least you are giving yourself an opportunity to potentially put a good score together.

Miss the fairway and you are likley to be in a bad place both mentally and physically.

        Re: Almost there......!

I'm with Bill on this one - with a sharp short game, you can miss every fairway and still score par. You're still going to hit greens from the rough if you've got game, and your short game will make up for the ones you don't hit. Now, qassim, you make it sound like rough = woods or jail.

If that's the case, I agree that getting off the tee and in good position is important.

However, banging driver is STILL not the way to do it. Unless you're playing 6800y or more, I bet you could still tie your PB without your driver in the bag. And even perhaps hit more fairways.

So again, banging driver at the range is a waste of time (although it's fun).

I'm starting to theorize, however, the the issue is truly overswinging with the driver, versus 'not being able to hit it like every other club'. It seems most get on the tee, get the 1W in their hands, and suddenly the fairway looks like a long drive grid.

Before the snow came, my plan with my driver was simply to aim up the left to protect against my surprise slice, and simply swing easy. I did that for my last 4 rounds. I only hit driver 4 times per round, and I hit 11/16 fairways, and when I didn't, I was in the first cut (and tended to pull the ball just a touch). I may have been 10 yards short of where I normally am sometimes, but I'd say easily 1/3 of the time I was just as far as I normally am.

Perhaps everyone banging driver wouldn't need to if they'd just take it easy, rather than trying to put the ball over the back fence.

You're right Bill but if you barely make the Ladies Tee - and thats with the rare one that goes straight - then you might join me at the range with a Driver.

            Hi Lowpost,

Don't really disagree with what you are saying. I could probably work my way round a course without the driver and probably hit a reasonable score.
However, the 'sportsman' in me wants to play the game like the pros and if they can hit the driver i also want to hit it.

when playing at home i use driver on all par 4's and 5's mainly because it has become one of my 'reliable' clubs!

                      Re: Almost there......!

Since changing coaches in March 07 fellas, I use my driver on all holes where I can. That's what coach wants me to do. That's how I am to get confidence.

Now when i start hitting a few more fairways - watch out.

Had an interesting lesson last friday. Club face is still open at top and I the takeaway is on the inside.

So back to working on the takeaway, ie, clubhead forward of the hands and taken hands back along toe line. At the top of the swing - holding a tray of drinks.

Very very compact, great ball flight and longer.

He's shortened my stance and changed my grip.

For long game, pitches and sand, I am to grip the club in all the fingers of both hands. As for chips - in the palms.

An amazing thing coach said, I am not to feel any tension in the the right thumb and right index finger (I am r/h).

Oh, another thing - I was dipping on the takeaway.

He said next time he sees me I will be on single figures - it's only one shot he said. Great way of looking at it. I see him every two months thereabouts.

                      Thanks for reading x x

There you all go with your fancy logik and facts, ruining everybody's practicing. *sigh*

You better believe you can "score" at the range BTW. Pink, argyle-clad ladies!

I'm signing up for the next "short-game weekend" at my club!

I know that this is different from place to place, but at my club, Rough=Lost ball.

Now, that's 2 shots on your score, and you're still on the tee and have to do it all again.

I'm gripping down on my 3w a lot, trying to keep it on the lawn. Once there, I can still come up short in my approach and be 1 shot ahead of the dude that was in the rough and lost his ball.

Are you a man or a mouse? Play the game like it's meant to be played - ditch the 3w off the tee and start slammin' the driver.

drop the driver and get out the 1 iron and see parts of the course you did not know existed.

                                Hi Bill,

I recently picked up a set of old snake eyes clubs and the guy threw in a 1 iron. My mates and i had great fun with it in the range - one day next summer I will take it on the course just to prove how macho I really am (i'll make sure I get the local search & rescue teams on standy beforehand).
