  • Ball advice please

    Hi all,

Being quite new to the game I am hoping someone out there can give me some advice on ball selection. I know some balls spin more easily than others and so are more likely to make sliced shots even worse, and that the compression of a ball should be matched to your swing speed. I have been told that my swing is fairly slow and I do tend to slice the odd shot or two when playing with my higher irons and woods so I am hoping a ball change may help, even if only by a small amount.

I am reasonably happy with my short game for now, a bit more distance and accuracy with the woods and long irons and I'm sure I'll be consistently in the low 90's instead of hovering around the 100 mark.

I play with Mizuno Mx-15 irons and MP-001 woods, all steel shafted and regular flex if that makes any difference. By the way I'm not made of money so no recommending balls that cost £3 each, I lose at least 2 a round and can't afford them

Cheers in advance for any help,

My advice would be to just use cheap balls, dont worry about spin balls at this stage. While they have big advantages for low single figure handicappers they have big disadvantages for higher handicap golfers.

Any sort of golf ball will not really make a noticeable improvement on your score so just concentrate on refining your swing.
I dont know what swing speed your reaching but for a slower the swing the lower compression will give your better distance and control.

Go for the nike mojo if you want to spend any money on balls. If not, just play and don't worry about it.

Range balls are the cheapest! Although you cant use them in competition why not use them to practice with. You can also buy x-outs and some stores have slightly used balls.

It's no joy hitting balls that are like rocks so choose a ball that provides a good compromise between distance and spin, it'll feel a lot better when you hit a good shot and provide you enough grip on the greens.

I wouldn't be too fussy on the brand, I've played most makes and the ones that I've liked the best where some Wilson DNA Spin that I paid very little for in a discount golf store or more recently some Wilson PX3's that were a freebie at a tournament.

What your club doesent have balata range balls? Range balls are the cheapest option. If he/she is happy with hitting them then it isnt too much of a big deal. The second best option of course would be to get x-outs or buy used balls at the course. I keep a few range balls in the bag to use on longest drive contests in golf outtings in case I dont have any Rock Flights in my bag.

Try and get some of last years Titleist NXT balls, the changed the design slightly so will be selling the old model off cheap now.

Also Callaway are clearing some of the old HX range really cheap as well to make way for the HX Hot. They are a premium ball but I got some for £1.60 a ball which cant be bad.

I'd recommend buying some Class A refurbished golf balls. They are good to practice with and they are good quality. Class A Nike balls are good. I can get spin but can't afford expensive balls (I'm a student, can't afford a thing) but I still get good control and spin with the Nike balls. I was pleasantly surprized, you could be too...

To add to that, any grade A ball will be good for you. You can find tons on ebay for very cheap

                    Re: Ball advice please

Thanks for all the advice guys, much appreciated. I've gone the eBay route and got a bunch of Grade A Pinnacle low compression distance balls. Hopefully they should help reduce a little of the slice when I get my Driver out without losing too much distance.

Best ever opening 9 on Friday, 41! Shame about the 52 on the back 9, still my best round this year though.
