i play the ball off the toe a lot to cut the distance into the green and it is easy to do and gives you the feel you have more control of the club in your hands. with the smaller head of say the G5 or the new G10 you don't seem to have the same control.
again i think its a lot to do with how you play and the conference you have in the clubs you use.
i feel that shaping a shot and controlling the distance is more important than hitting long so i am happy to have my old clubs with more loft than the newer clubs so my iron flys higher but shorter than say a G10 5 iron.
most people think the ZING's and ISI as ugly head and look to big but i think that it gives you more face to work with.
i don't think there is another club that the head looks like the ZING/ISI and i would love to have the beryllium/copper ZINGs/ISI as the feel really good and look good too.
for a club with some 22/24 year old technology's they still take a lot of beating from most of the top makers. there may well be better clubs but i still don't think there is any that are more forgiving.
if you ever get the chance try and hit a few shots with a ZING/ISI and see how close the balls end up, then try and hit off the toe near where the groves end and you get the same pattern but 5 to 7 yards short.
it a great way to hit a full shot but take 5 yards off and the ball lands soft too.
    cheers
    Bill
I find it very intriguing how you intentionally hit toe-side to suck yards off... I'm still a young golfer with lots to learn it seems!

Re: forgiveness - 7 yards is quite enough when you're not expecting it. More bladey designs can cost you as much as 11 or 12 yards - so half that much kept is still good. However, I'll take all I can get and get half of those 7 yards back again (or slightly more).

The Wishon 770CFE iron loses an incredible 2.5 yards for a 1" toeside miss. The 870Ti 2y and the 560MC 4y.

I'm not saying that the ISI's or the ZING's aren't forgiving as far as clubs go, just that there's even MORE forgiveness for those that want or need it.

      hi lowpost
i bow to your greater knowledge of Wishon clubs as i have never seen one over here. i have read about them and Tom Wishon and his great designs and technology.
i think it unlikely i ever get to try one of his irons but have seen one of his drivers use in a comp once.

there use to be 17 club makers and 3 ball makers in Musselburgh in the 1800 (where i live) but sadly none here any more and even the last club maker moved out of St Andrews a few years ago and make mostly wooden headed putters for the USA.
the old days when you had real club makers in Scotland is sadly long gone and most but not all work on golf courses repairing clubs rather than making then.
I'm always impressed to here of people like you and Ted making clubs and tweaking and adjusting them to give you the flight you want and need and clubs like that are worth so much more than clubs bought off a shelf.

i always remember hearing of Lee Trevino going in to Johny Letter factory before the open in 1971 i think it was and adjusting the loft and on all his clubs and would not let anyone else do the adjustments for him. i think he took loft off all his clubs when playing links golf. he was not only a great golfer but he know how a club worked and how to get the best of of them, that year he won the open at Royal Birkdale and again Muirfield the year after.
      keep up the good work.

see you have dropped your ping eye 1 iron but are still using the big headed ISIs, it is hard to find a more forgiving club head than the ISIs.
did it take you long to get use to the new driver with its bigger head.
        cheers

        Hey Bill...

Yeah, the 1 iron is having a rest, wasn't striking it consistently, even whilst hitting all the other clubs well enough, so thought it best.

As for the new driver, I love it, hit it well more often than not and it has given me at least another 20-30 yards on my old ISI driver. Unfortunately, a while back the head weight dropped out and once I got it back after having it repaired (all credit to Ping for their lifetime warranty), just couldn't seem to hit it sweetly again.

I'm thinking it may be time to upgrade my ISI irons too, the grooves are starting to wear on a few of the irons. But, I still love them and that decision won't be made lightly...

        Cheers

                Re: What's in your bag?

My clubs are somewhat eclectic and generally very old... but they do me reasonably well, and I absolutely love my 16 year old irons

                Driver
                13.5 HT Callaway FT-i

                Fairway/Rescue Woods
                Wilson X-31 3 wood *
H3 Ben Hogan CFT Hybrid - 5 wood replacement
Barracuda Escape Wood (24 degree) - Rescue Club **

                Irons
Ben Hogan H40 Oversize - 3 iron to PW (Dating from 1993-94)

                Wedge(s)
                Wilson 55 degree Harmonised- SW

                Putter
                Bronty Rustler 4-Hole putter

                Balls
Whatever comes out of the lake Usually Titleist Pro V1's

                * This is a relic of a bygone age (maybe the early nineties?) and I can't hit it for toffee for some reason, so I'm going to be getting rid of it. Thinking about the next Hogan Hybrid up... but it's very hard to hit them off the tee... I do love my FT-i so maybe the 3-wood, any ideas?

** I love this club, it will get you out of the deepest rough with good distance, but I'm not ending up there much any more so I'm thinking of replacing it, maybe with a 2 or driving iron, any ideas?
