A little soap and water, and a nylon brush (a vegetable brush will do nicely). I usually cover the vent hole to avoid water going down the shaft. But I'm paranoid.

Also just to point out becareful with most washing up detergents, as they can make the rubber hard, due to them removing the rubbers natural oils.
The detergent I would use is windscreen wash as this has been formulated to protect rubber items eg wiper blades.
