lie is the angle of the shaft from the soled club (by soled club i mean the toe and heel of the club is touching the ground at the same time) to your body.. the more upright the lie is the closer you will be to the ball. i think he is saying that when you hit the ball if you lie is wrong then if your toe is lower than the heel or visa versa you will have a crooked line on your club showing that you clubs heel was not at the same height as you toe at impact. if the toes/heel were a the same level at impact then the line would be strait showing you have a proper lie. you can either change the lie on your club or stand further back or closer to the ball to change your lie at impact.

It is pretty simple.

A sharpie will work just fine--that is what I used.

The range ball already has a line on it, well most of them do anyway.

Follow the line with the sharpie.

Place the drawn line perpendicular to the ground ---I --------

Hit it with your club, the mark on the ball will leave a mark on your club face.. if it looks like this \ on your club your lie is too upright. If the line on your club looks like this / your lie is too flat. If you are a divot taker you can also look at your divots for deeper toe hits or deeper heel hits.

I have heard that some golf manufacturers are now releasing clubs that are 2 degrees upright to help slicers...???? This could probably be another conversation string in itself. Actually I would love to hear everyone's opinion on this....

When you strike the ball the mark leaves a line on your iron. if the top of the line is straight up and down, then your lie is fine. if it leans one way or the other then you are either too upright or to flat. Away from too flat, towards you too upright.

hi
another if to use a wax crayon on the sole of the club to check the lie. i use a blue caryon, the mats at the range rub off the crayon that grounds and you see what parts left and can judge if your lies right.
dont do it to much as it can leave a blue mark on the mat lol
using a crayon to mark a line on the ball works too but a bit faint the result on the club face but does work.
