  • Hopeless with irons

Hi, I've just joined, so if this has come up before I appologise. I cannot seem to get the hang of hitting down on the ball. I drive well, usually getting in on the fairway, not the longest, but as I struggle with my flexibility, I do ok. On a par 4 I usually get to within 120 - 90 meters from the pin off the tee, and then my problems start. Using a normal stance, I usually slice it, don't get any hieght, and miss the green, even on the odd time I hit it it'll usually roll off!

Now I have found out recently I'm left eye dominant. Someone has told me that I should move keep the ball towards my left foot (I'm right handed), and look at the front of the ball, making sure I keep my wieght 60/40 on my left side. And keep my hands infront of the club face. Will this work?

All the advice sounds like it's adding up to solid ballstriking.

I'm a big fan of a simple tee drill.

Put a tee in the ground, level with the top of the grass, 3" in front of the ball. Do whatever you have to do to hit the ball AND dig the tee out of the ground.

For me, right now, I have to focus on hitting the inside quarter of the ball and digging out the imaginary tee. This produces solid ball strikes for me.

      hi
i would go along with what Lowpost said. i don't try and hit down on thew ball as it will happen by its self you will come into the ball steeper with the shorter irons and i like to think of a point a few inches in front of the ball as my target and swing to it and let the ball just get in the way. i find i hit the ball a lot cleaner that way.
try what lowpost said and put a tee or a coin about 2 to 3 inches ahead of the ball and line you with the ball bit swing to hit the tee or coin. it helps you move your weight to the left and keeps the club head speed up.
also try and swing a little slower and think more on making clean contact. when you start hitting cleaner then speed up a little but work on cleaner contact first, as you hit longer with a good sweet spot hit swinging slower than swinger faster and hitting of the sweet spot.
      cheers

Thanks guys, I'll give them a go once this rain stops!

It's been a fanastic summer here in NZ (a bit too dry if anything), but winter has suddenly hit, and I haven't been able to get out and play (on my days off) for nearly 3 weeks!!!!

Mmmm. Played the other day, with a mate of mine. He doesn't believe in practise, and always wants to "get on with it". So it was straight into a round. I didn't play well

So I decided whilst he had a celebratory drink (he beat me by one shot, I usually beat him!) I went to practise. And low and behold, I tried the drill you guys suggested and it worked (well most of the time). Even got within 2 inches of sinking one from about 100 meters!!!! Only trouble was I kept loosing coins!

Try leaves, or put your ball 3" behind a brown bit of grass, or a cigarette butt, or a bit of dirt, or an old divot (and make it a trench)...

Hi Lowpost and Bill, do you remember me. Thank you very much for your advice.

I've not played much recently, but I took your advice and my iron play has improved greatly. One thing though. I've found out that my original clubs (bought by my wife years ago) are longer by 3/4" than my other set (the spare - old set I've got). Now my original clubs are Yonnex graphite stiff shafted and about 10 years old (I've been told they were very good clubs for their day). The spare (quite a cheap set) are steel shafted. Using a 7 iron I can get about 130 meters with both sets (a huge improvement, as before your advice - I was hitting about 100 - 105 meters!), but I've found that I can hit the spare set more consistantly. I don't think my club speed is particularly quick.

Could it be that part of my problem all along has been the clubs I was using, or is psycological? I'm about 6ft tall, largish build, with a stiff back (I use my arms more than my back due to an old back injury).

                Looking forward to your reply.

                  hi again
i would of thought the longer shafts would of been better with you being 6 foot but maybe there a bit to stiff in the shaft and thats why the steel shafts feel better.
your best bet would be to take both your 7 irons to a club maker and have them checked against you swing to see what set matches up best.
just to check the lie of both clubs.
good to heard you getting more distance now and i would think you would be getting better contact on the ball too.
                  all the best

The graphite shafted clubs are longer to keep the swingweight up. The other bonus is being tall and armsy usually means being upright - so the extra length helps out, too. A proper fitting may be the most helpful; then you can choose whether or not to reshaft, and which set of heads to do it with!

Thanks guys, as always your advice is greatly appreciated.

I'll have to find a club fitter I think. I haven't got much money to spend though, so I may have to soldier on with what I have for the time being . One thing this has taught me, is that for my next set, I should get a proper fitting before I buy........ When ever that may be.

                      Thanks again.

Some may bash it, but not the frugle type like myself. $87 for whole iron set, count me in. Supposedly someone used them for 40 days and then returned them so they give them away (minus the shipping, thought i find $87 hard to believe on shipping, but still, its cheap enough for me). They have graphite shafts and were custom fit and I love 'em, and the only problem I have had was the back sticker paltic thing fell off and I coulda glued it back on, but i didn't becuase its not that big of a deal to me. People look at me wierd with a no-name brand, but I could care less. I even had a guy come up to me once saying how he has the real clubs and spent $400-600 (whatever they cost) and how much he liked them, I didn't have the heart to tell him mine onl cost $80. I also broke my 5i but it was difinatly from poor golfing and trial and error, and the replacement club was only $12 but downside is it was 3 years newer so it was from a differnt type set and looks odd in my set, but I still can't complain.

I would also use "secondary" email adress, the kind you use only when you are expecting an email from something and you need to be able to check it... Because they send 1 or 2 junk emails a month for the 1st year or so, but that wasn't a big deal at all.
Exactly. I've read that Warrior Golf is like herpes. They start out a constant annoyance and then when you think you've got them beat and they're gone - BOOM! They're back again!

Sure, it's a small dollar to pay, but the time you'll spend trying to get them to stop hounding you...

Optingolfer points you to the Warrior clubs. Perhaps Optingolfer is less headache than dealing directly with Warrior.
