  • Canadian Wanna be Golfer

    Hi All
I am a 50+ female golfer...been at it a few years and still just a frustrated as ever...I just keep trying but I don't seem to get much better. I have taken many lessons, read many tips, bought hundreds of books watched all academies on the golf channel but still a very inconsistent golfer. Sometimes I wish I could give it up but in my heart I know that won't happen .....Maybe forum will "twig" something for me..
    Happy to be here !!!
    Looking forward to learning

    Hi There,

I have you looked at the 3 skills concept, maybe a lifeline for you?

And I would sell my flat to play golf wherever that person in your avatar is standing.

Beautiful. The scenery, that is. Not the person. Can't really tell. Too much shadow from the hat. And I tend to reserve judgement of that ilk for after I've met them a few times...........

      Ahem.

Hi JPJo, I agree - it's time to drop the mechanics and learn to play a game. (This coming from a bona-fide mechanic, trying desperately to become an ex-mechanic).

            Hi jackpotjo.

You might also be interested in 4 Magic Moves. Do a search. There was a lengthy discussion on that method recently, and there is a free download of the introductory steps. The method of making the early wrist break is somewhat unorthodox, but one you get over that in your mind, it does make other good things happen later in the swing as a consequence.

I've been playing and absorbed in golf for about fifty years and have tried just about everything. After all that, I wanted a simple swing that I did not have to think about. I wanted to enjoy the game and the company, without swing thoughts and worrying about doing this and doing that. I found that this method did that for me.

              Thanks Ted
I have done a load of research on this and I must say it has me very intrigued...I am going to the range tomorrow ( it opens for the season ) and trying out the early wrist break..Sure is going to feel awkward as I have been careful not to do this over the years.
Very pleased you brought this to my attention.
I am a little confused about ordering this should I decide to pursue this technique further....Did you buy the complete course ??? If so did you have it shipped or did you do the online download ??
It would be so nice to just hit the damn ball without my ongoing mental checklist...paralysis by analysis...Just hate it. I am so inconsistant..never ever do I trust my swing.
Thanks again Ted for your support.
              Regards

                Hi Jo,

I found the free download of the Dante book on the internet while I was looking for something else a few years ago, and printed it out of curiousity. I have always been a golf junky and liked to experiment and try different ideas. I read the material and was thought it was interesting, and tried the intriguing early break method and the back swing the same day at home. I was fortunate that it clicked for me immediately. I was at the range the next day. I then did a lot more researching of the method and read many other reviews and forums to pick up as much as I could. I found the Andy Brown New 4 Magic Moves website and looked at the videos his site affords. With all this information I had a good basis for the method. I made some small adjustments for myself. I did not bother to buy Brown's full course.

I joined this forum in late 2008, and became aware that there were threads started on this method in early to mid 2007, when the threads were recently resurrected, with heavy discussion. Take a look at them, as there is a lot of good discussions reflecting actual experiences and observations. Do a search for "4 magic moves".
You will find the free download of that book given in those threads, but here is the link anyways.

                http://www.newgolfswing.com/newgolfswing01.php

If you feel the need to buy the full books or courses, you can do so.

BTW, I spent a lot of time in the Rockies and the West in general, and played some of the courses, including Banff, Jasper and Priddis Green. It's hard to say which course is in your avatar.

                  Hey Ted ,
First off thanks so much for the Dante link. I am going to print it ASAP.

I prefer your method to learning this. Much more economical Would you mind me asking you for pointers as I run into problems

Ted the mountain in my avatar is Mt. Kidd in Kananaskis Country. It was a great trip but ended with me getting hit with a golf ball. On the 14th tee par 5 a young fellow..15 years old with the attitude and "garb" decided to hit onto the green with myself, my son and husband all standing next to the hole. My son had putted out and was holding the flag. Randy and I were putting out. My son just happened to look back and yelled to us, but no time to react. This kid drilled the ball straight into my back right side flank. Dropped me like a stone. The ball never hit the ground. I got the full impact. He was about 110 yards out. He really put "smoke" on that shot. We were in plain view. There was also a grounds crew on the green with us...they had on hard hats. They rushed me back to the pro shop in their buggy. When the ball hit me I spun around in pain and saw the white lettering on his shirt as he turned and walked back to his cart, that's how close he was. He was with his parents. His mother "freaked"... Father, that's another story..When the ball hit me there was first a heck of an internal vibration sensation, then a burning that I can't describe other then I think it might feel that way if a bullet hit you. I had on a shirt that was quite thick but there was still the imprint of the golf ball dimples on my back as well as marker ink on my shirt...What an experience...I am very nervous out on the course now. I think it will more time to put this behind me..
My son later told my daughter it scared him as as he never heard anyone make the sounds I did....I remember a very high pitch squeal. I never imagined it would hurt that much. If This ball had hit one of us on the head I hate to think what may have happened. Oh, I always knew it would hurt but never ever thought to that extent.
I did confront him later. The rest is a long story...

Wow I"m so sorry to get off topic but I'm afraid as much as I enjoyed the trip whenever I see this pic I think of it...It was shortly after this photo I got hit.. Oh well that was yesteryear...

I am really looking forward to this season. I am hoping this will be the one where I can finally get some consistency to my game .

Will run for now Ted and have to say thank you once again for all your help.

I wish there was somewhere here to post pics as I have a couple a very nice photos of the courses in Kananaskis..

Maybe we could start a new section for photos of places people loved to golf ??

                  Take care friend.

                    Hi Jo,

I was actually thinking it was the Kananaskis course. Near Canmore, as I recall, not the "deep" Rockies.

Regarding getting hit with the golf ball, what you describe is exactly what it's like for anyone who's been hit or was a witness. The blow is like getting hit with a bullet, as you say. Ever hear a big manly guy shriek like a woman (not to disparage women, but that's the sound)!

I hope you have some success and enjoyment from trying this. Again, read the threads. The video which John Lynch provides of Andy Brown's demonstration of the grip is very good. There are interesting references to particular nuances of the method and slight modifications some people have made to have it suit them. One is the forward press, which some people find as a bother and discard it, but if you can incorporate it that's good also.

                    Ted

                      Hi Ted
I tried the early wrist break today...I think I could get to like it but have to work on it for a while for sure...I'm not doing it quite right as I am hitting most shots left...left...left...left First day at the range after a year seven months off..not expecting lot. Doing something wrong...closing the face, hitting to early ??? Will do more research to see what I come up with...
The hit is more consistent and feels "cleaner"... distance is good...just not doing a few things right to go with the wrist break..I checked the link but the free download wants $22.00.

                      Later

                        Hi Jo,

Regarding the link, don't bother downloading. Just move along from lesson to lesson. At the left side of the Introduction page you can either click on each chapter or lesson, or at the end of each chapter you click "Next" to move to the next lesson.

Regarding the lefts, I was going to warn you that there might be a tendency to just lift the arms from the early break position, because the club feels so light. But you got ahead of me. You get so fixated with the early break and forget about the normal back swing.

You have to turn your shoulders and take your arms and the club back and up on plane, as you would in a normal back swing. Turning the shoulders is one of the most important part of the golf swing that people ignore. Many of the pros have that as their key thought. They talk about turning, so that their backs face the target. That gives power/distance and also accuracy. My key thought is to try to make my left shoulder line up with my right foot (without losing spine angle or excessively tilting the shoulders). I can get there, but if you can't, that's what you try for. When you do this, you will find you feel really wound up and have a feeling of stored power braced against the inside of the right foot, ready to start your downswing with the hips. This will allow your head to stay back behind the ball as your body, shoulders and arms unwind into the ball.

Read all parts of the method, and don't bypass anything.

I'll send you a private message. Please open it.

                          Hi Ted,
Out to the range again today. I really do like this concept so far...Things are changing for the better and believe me it has been a long time since I had any hope of improvement. For the last few years the more changes I made the worse things seem to get. I am liking this

Now I have to buy a new driver I have been wanting a new driver because couple of years ago I bought a Ladies King Cobra LD.. This is an offset driver for women who tend to slice...I thought it would work well for me. I wasn't using a driver because I found it difficult to hit. Whenever I did use it I sliced a lot so I thought buying this driver was a good idea Last year with my King Cobra driver I started knocking everything left..Today I tried it with the early break...well I am hitting the ball so much better and consistent that I have to line up well right of the target with the face of the club at the target in order to hit my target.
Don't like having to aim way right of a target in order to hit it.. This will cause me more problems with alignment if I keep compensating. So I guess I am in the market for another driver...I sure hope I don't make the same mistake and buy another driver that work for me

Honest to goodness with this 4MM concept I really feel confident my game will improve this year.
I know I have to work on this because I am still having problems ( Rome wasn't built in a day ) but I know that the work I put into it will be a benefit for me...

I am so pleased I came to this forum !!
Thank you Ted for all your help...I sure appreciate your support and patience.
                          Regards
                          Jo

                            Re: Canadian Wanna be Golfer

                            Hi Jo,

When you buy the driver, make sure you are fitted for it. Either find a good fitter and club maker, not the guys who just put the components together, or go to a respectable golf store which has knowledgeable people working there.

I suppose it depends on where you live and how accessible the above facilities are. You could put out a request for references for your area in a post in one of the other forums at this site. You can find good fitters all over Canada, in Saskatoon, Winnipeg, certainly Vancouver and Toronto. I know quite a few in the Greater Toronto area.

LowPost42 is in North Central Ontario, but has extended connections through his associations.

You have the opportunity to do this right. I hate to see people getting equipment, which does not suit them. Some of my friends were sold stiff flex clubs, or blade irons, or 9 degree loft drivers, and they are not good and old golfers.

You may be surprised, but you may be looking at a 13 or 14 degree driver, almost certainly with women's flex graphite shafts with low bend point. You should also be fitted for proper length and grip size. Here's a general guide for Ladie's flex shaft - Driver speed swing less than 60 mph (100 km/h). *Driver carry distance less than 180 yds. Club used from 150 yds. a 3 iron or wood.
Don't forget the driver distance is carry only, without roll.

Regarding the "lefts", it may not be the offset that causes that. I have had this in mind from when you first mentioned the lefts, but I gave you the idea about turning the shoulder first. You might look at some of the threads which talk about that, and the tests for your swing path. (see the thread "Need help with my swing", for one).

I'm so glad that things are looking up with your game and the enjoyment of it.

                            Ted

                              Hi Ted
I am going to take your advice and go for a swing analysis in Calgary Alberta. Nothing I know of available in Edmonton.. This place is operated by Callaway. Not sure how long I will have to wait to get in. I called but they are closed for Easter week-end. I will try again on Monday to see what I can get for information. We would have to travel and stay overnight but it would be worth it I think.

I was at the range yesterday. Had a pretty decent day but still struggling with the change, it is coming easier.
It is discouraging when people on the range think I am about a 4 handicapper and I am in the thirties... they watch me swinging and tell me what a great a swing I have. Last year a fellow asked me if I worked at course because he wanted me to give his wife lessons,..I am one of the world greatest driving range golfers and a complete flop on the course. Always have been.

Advise from everybody is to get on the course and off the range. I just can't get it together out there.

My driver is about 210 yards ( with roll ) but not very consistent.. 150 yards for me is anywhere from a 5 to a 7 iron depending on the course..

My short game as well is really bad. I have reached par 5's in two and
                              taken a 6 or 7 .

I once drove concrete mixer for a living so I was in decent shape as far as upper body strength went. Handling 60 pound chute extensions everyday for 10 years gave me a lot of muscle.
I didn't not use a driver back then but got about 240 with my three wood of the tee. The women nicknamed me Magilla Gorilla LOL...age and lifestyle has changed that for sure

I am so looking forward to the 4MM helping me out. So far I really like what I have read but some of it is quite scary.
The early wrist break is a bit of a shock but it's working..The other fright is the posture..I read it over a few times sure it was a misprint...still not positive it isn't because they say to bend at waist, round your shoulders and hunch them. Weight more to the heels and butt not outward....if anything tucked a little under

Posture is another thing I put a lot of work into being sure to bend at hips and maintain straight back with square shoulders with butt slightly out.
But obviously none of this has worked for me over the years so I haven't much to lose do I ??

Well I am going to go read more and see if I can wrap my head around all this

                              Regards
                              Jo
