  • Left hand/arm positioning

    I'm an average golfer, right handed, handicap around +18, and I have a question about my grip and positioning.

    I have large hands, and when I grip the club with my left hand (keeping mindful of holding the club in the balls of my fingers), the only way I can get the "V" to point to my right ear is if I cup my wrist.

    Is is "correct" to have a cupped left wrist address, provided that the "V" is pointing at my right ear?

    Or, is it correct to have a straight left arm and wrist at address? This way actually feels more correct, but you know the saying, if it feels right, it's probably wrong.

    I looked at the Lessons page on "GRIP" and noticed that picture shows a left wrist that appears to be very cupped. Is one expected to maintain that position through impact?

    Any assistance you can provide is much appreciated.

    Re: Left hand/arm positioning

    tanc24: I'm not a PGA instructor, so I'm not going to address the cupped wrist issue. I will however share something that helped me. I'm 5'9, 170 lbs, and I too have big hands. What helped me the most was to have three additional wraps of tape on all my clubs for a total of four wraps under the grips. This took a lot of pressure off my wrists and I was able to grip the club much more comfortably than before. I hope this helps and by the way, WELCOME!

      OOPS, MY REPLY WAS SUPPOSED TO END UP IN ANOTHER THREAD!
      ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
      Try to bring the club on more of an inside plane. I had a slicing problem for awhile, and I talked to a scratch golfer. He looked at my swing and saw I was bringing my club back on way too much of an outside plane.
      Tuck a towel (or headcover) under your right armpit. You won't be able to get a full swing, but make sure the towel stays tucked under your armpit throughout your backswing. It will give you the feel of and inside approach.
      Hope this helps.
