  • how to chip

this is the first part of the swing and once you can do this you are well on your way to hitting good full shots as well.

    set up
Start out doing this with the ball in a fluffy lie, ball CENTERED in your stance and weight favoring front foot, about 60%. Have VERY LITTLE angle between front arm and club shaft, close to a straight line.

From there JUST CUP the right wrist back, no conscious body movemnet in the back swing
now just turn the body back towards the target starting with the hips first, while keeping hands and arms QUIET

that is all there is to chpping, no need to make it more complicated.
if you have a hard time quieting the arms, just use a belt around your body and elbows and repeat the procedure

What does keeping hands and arms "Quiet" mean?? Seems to be almost no movement in your description here beyond wrists and hips. What am I missing??

LOL,,, I tried the wrist cupping on a halfswing last night, as if to chip or pitch, and it felt good and seemed to work well, but I think I had a little more movement than you describe. But mainly I kept the clubhead back on the movement through the ball. I guess I'm close. For now I'm going to keep working on the full swing technique I got from you. You've been great..

now once you get to half swing you should have a full right wrist cup and partial left wrist cock. also, ALLOW the body to turn back that will happen because it will follow the hands. soon you will start to get compression on chips and hear that CLICK, and say good bye to chunking and blading

Got it... Went to the range today and am definitely hitting straighter with the cupping technique. Hit some great drives off the tee and the grass. Now do you have a tip for making good contact on every shot.

you need to get used to this, so practice
how was your compression, was it better?

Yes, though I had a "very" strong left to right wind blowing that at times beat my ball down. On a couple of semi-quiet moments at least one ball seemed to fly for ever(no help from the wind). Will play a lot this weekend and let you know how it goes. Practice, practice, practice... Boy life is tuff..

                  Re: how to chip

Keeping the right wrist cupped thru impact helps with consistency. I think the technical term is supenated (sp?) Also, stand more upright and experiment with toeing the club at address. Meaning the clubhead is slightly weighted or tilted towards the toe. This will virtually eliminate chunking the ball.

Just a stupid question...What are the definitions of "cocking" & "cupping" of the wrists. Thanks,

Cupping equates to the angle of the wrist like you were carrying a box of pizza with one hand. When you address the ball on a chip shot, your hands will be positioned slightly in front of the ball. Look at your right hand and wrist (for a RH golfer) and see the angle that is created. Try to keep that angle thru impact for a chip shot.

to add to that, you want to increase that angle in the take away

                          Re: how to chip

OK chipping has been way too made difficult for normal golfers. Eye over the ball, using a putting stroke, (lock out the top hand of the stroke if required, meaning put it on top of the shaft, NO Hands on the stroke)Look at the landing area you want to land it, take a number of practice strokes, basically use your putting preroutine, then LOOK AT THEN BALL, take the stroke, and listen, for practise see what he grass does after the ball has left, means you watched the ball. Use different clubs, step on the ball to put it down, fluff it up, use different clubs but maintain the same stroke. Pelz wants you to use wrist,,, we are not that good. The common golfer and man normally doesn't have that abilty. The pros are that good. Play around with it, there is no easy way, you have to play and try different things,,, it takes time. Let me know when you can do the skid stop chip.

I just dont see it as being this complicated, how hard is it to cup the right right back and turn through? I once taught a guy to chip in ONE minute. He was a guy who did not care to hear how or why it worked, he just wanted to know how to do it. I am a public school teacher and have been a coach as well, part of being a good teacher is analyzing a students capabilities and maximizing it. The "common" guy should be able to do this, and the full swing, well enough to shoot in the 80's, sorry to hear you doubt the "common" man. So would you like to know now that I can do the skid stop chip, not that hard of a shot really

If you can teach me to play golf well, as easily as you just helped my chipping improve by 90%, then I'm coming over to visit you!

Thanks (again!) for your excellent advice. If you're ever passing my end of the world, you'll be more than welcome to stop by (and teach me golf!) !
