I believe the length of their drives and their egotistic handicaps go hand-in-hand.

Perhaps the egotistical ones are the ones who have a high handicap and short drive and can't seem to improve their game, so, they try to call down the plus handicappers and act like anyone who consistently gets par or below par on the course isn't marking their real score. You can't build yourself up by calling others down. What you have to remember about the really good golfers is they practice and play a lot. I play a few times a month and my handicap hovers around 6 over par. That's not bad considering I don't get out all that much. Tigerwannabee on the other hand played 150 or more rounds last year in our northern winter shortened season(5-6 months). This season so far he probably has 90 or more rounds in already along with countless buckets of balls at the driving range. This is what makes him a very good golfer.

I don't ask much of anyone, but, right now I'm going to. Would those high handicappers with the bruised egos please shut up already????? There are better golfers then you and me out there that have scratch handicap and hit the ball 300 yards consistently on the fairway. That's life. Of course, there also are golfers out there who are not as accomplished as even you. So PLEASE quit moaning and whining and just get out there and play the game.

How true. I don't have a HCP yet, but I consistently score in the low 90s, occassionally in the 80s. I play by the rules of golf, but I have a friend who doesn't count penalty strokes and takes "gimmes" on putts. By doing this, he scores in the low 100s. If he played by the rules fully, he would score in the 130s. It used to drive me crazy but I don't worry about it any longer when I play w/him.[/quote]

I was playing with a guy a couple of weeks ago, there wasn't one hole were he didn't cheat. It was just a friendly match otherwise.....
When he was one the green and went to mark his ball he would place his marker as close to the ball as posible and then nudge the ball away and stick the marker in, when placing the ball back there was at least 2cm between the marker and ball. One the fairways when he had a bad lie a little nudge with the club and the ball was sat up nicely.
I still won

Stick by the rule mate, such players only cheat themselves.

I don't think this thread was started to discredit any long hitters, there's a few around here who can hit it consistantly in the 300 yard range and we're at sea level with soft tight fairways, it was about practically everyone stating their drives are 270+ and we all know that's not true so why stretch the facts? What really impresses me is one who knows the rules and plays by them, all the time, and has a 7 or better handicap. I played in a match a couple weeks ago and was paired with a club member who everyone said was real good, he's a 3 I think, and although he didn't do anything wrong as far as the rules are concerned he just so happened to shoot 84.... to my 80? I'm a legitimate 13 so for me to shoot that meant the course was set up a bit easy,I seen him hit driver-3 iron over on the 520 yard par 5 but it didn't have me shaking in my boots, my driver-5 wood-pitch had me 15' (I missed but halved the hole for us).


I went into the system to view his scores, the worst he posted was a 78 all year, he never posted that 84 although he has posted a few mid 70's since then. I wouldn't want him as a partner but I sure as h*ll would want to play him in a match.

I've played for just about 30 years, in all parts of the country with literally thousands of differant players and the best round I've ever witnessed wasn't even under par, it was a 72 by a 67 year old guy who never hit it more than 260 but never missed a fairway at par 70 Pine Valley which has a 153 slope and rightfully so and has absolutely treacherous bunkers and greens, I shot 88 and thought I played my a** off considering the amount of trouble on that course, he did impress me.

I cant understand why some on this thread seem to have the opinion that driving less than 300yds means you are not worthy to play golf, remember that we all loose flexibility and strength with age and that others just don't have the natural ability.

Also, it is not a crime for people to have high handicaps, the handicap system allows golfers of all abilities to compete with each other, it is something rather unique and special in our sport.

Cheating, well that's never acceptable but nothing to do with a players ability to hit the ball.

A little bit of advise that has helped me focus on ego "If you compare yourself with others you will become vain and bitter, there will always be greater and lesser persons than yourself"

You can trust me when I say that Tigerwannabee is a stickler for the rules. Never touches his ball and never takes a gimme. 0.3 handicap without the egotistical bulls**t. Thank you very much. Everyone who has a long drive and better then scratch handicap isn't lying.

Actually that's not completely true. I know a few guys who like to keep a low handicap and I know for a fact that they only enter their best scores into the computer at our club. Guys like that would be the ones that are considered to have egotistical handicaps....

What has been stated rather ofter is "people only think they hit it really far","the majority are just pumping them selves up and bragging","I am sure some have hit a few cart paths for some of their longer drives","I believe the length of their drives and their egotistic handicaps go hand-in-hand","Big hitters tend to spray the ball and have to recover". Have you read this stuff or just skipped over it. Most posters on this thread seem to think anyone who averages 300 yards consistently hitting the fairways is lying. Everyone should play golf just to have fun, regardless of handicap or distance on their driver. I just don't want anyone to discredit a golfers honesty, integrity or ability just because they say they hit their ball 300 yards. Have fun, play hard and always try to improve your game, that's my motto.

Good post, and unfortunately we see some of these things too often. I played a match last Saturday with a 2 handicapper. I'm a +2 at the moment, so 4 in the difference between us. I was 8 up after 9 holes and he conceded the match on the 9th green. No way in this world was he even close to a 2 handicap.

As far as seeing a few more good rounds, I like to play with good golfers. Surrounding yourself with better players, tends to bring up your own game. I played in a group today (all scratch golfers) where 73 was the high round by 2 guys. I was 70 and the other at 72 on a 6878 yd par 72 course. One thing I notice is that driving distance really don't matter all that much if the other parts of your game is decent. I was on average 30 to 40 yards longer than any in my group today (hit one 361 on a 486 yd par 5....had to put that in...it was HUGE!!) and still any one of us could have come out on top, as it wasn't the driving that got me there, but rather my 26 putts.
