All that checking and spinning chips and pitches look pretty, but if you want to lower your score, you need to get over that and start doing what works...This also applies to every aspect of the game, stop trying to look pretty and start doing what works, it is called playing within yourself. Had Phil followed this adage, he would be the 2006 U S Open Champ., so even pros get caught up in the looking pretty thing as oppsed to doing what works. Phil could have hit an iron off the 18th tee, and I gurantee you he would have par'ed that hole. A lesson for us all.
Having suffered with the chipping yips for many years it made me realise that if was ever going to improve at this sport ,then i would have to strengthen my approach game , which i have done to such a point that i very rarely have to chip. But if i do miss the green i am usually near enough to use my putter...I TOO AM A GREAT BELIEVER IN KEEPING IT SIMPLE.

      hi andy
well i tried out your method this morning.
the 5 clubs looked lost in the bag after i had cleared out the others to the boot of my car at one point i was thinking is this going to work?.
      the answer is yes
i carded a 79 on a par 66 course and if i hadnt had 29 putts it could have been so much better!
i also found how versatile my 3wood is i choked down to varying lengths got great results every time may get the 5 wood they are that good.
playing from middle of the fairway helped me to relax more because the lie was good and so i could just swing without worrying about the lie.
im going to carry on using this method as 1) the bags as light as a feather 2) no indecision over club selection.
thanks andy i learnt a lot about my game this morning!

the course is manor at kearsley
its short at just under 5000 yds but it has its fair share of tricky holes blind tee shots water hazard etc
the best thing was that i wasnt totting up the score so when i did at the end i had to double check it because i couldnt believe it.
im playing blackley next week a tougher longer course but im going to use the same aproach
my biggest thrill was bogeying the par 5's with my handicap they are nett birdies!

Why do you pick the 7i?

I absolutely agree this is the way to lower your score, but it the putting that really kills you!

I remember reading a story about Seve as a child had very little money and only has a 2i! he used to use it for everything even out of the sand.

I'd like to add this though. I've had trouble with my driver until recently and being able to hit it down the fairway 200-220 yards certainly makes it easier to reach the green in 2 shots. It's also fun to watch the ball go and go and go!

A low score is important, but having fun is even more important.

I have just one question about this great system. What do you do when you bring nothing longer than a 5 iron and the 18th hole on my course requires a 200 yard poke to get across the lake.

I might be there until 2007.....

every hole like the 18th you have just described , has/or should have what is called a bail out area where higher h/capped peolpe,JUNIORS,elderly players and women off the red tee's can hit to. so it shouldn,t be a problem. if there is no such area , i suggest you talk to your commitee becuase this is being very unfriendly towards the above mentioned people and i for one wouldn't want to play there.

                            Hi james.

there are no hard fast rules here. you can use whatever club that you can hit onto the fairway every time. I chose the 7 iron because for most mid-high h/cappers this is the longest club that they are most accurate with.

ragrding putting. I totally agree. but don't you think that it can act as an incentive for mid- high h/cappers to work on there short game once they realise how much it is letting them down.( GREGJ WILLIS has an excellent putting drill for people to try ).

Can you think off any better way to have fun? Look at the variation of shots that you might have to learn becuase you have a limited number of clubs at your disposal.

                            regards

                                hi chessbum
i modified andys method so i could include my 3wood which im supremely confident with so if there is no bail out area im sure i could carry the lake with that club.
i suppose you have to assess the course you are going to play before you select your clubs you are going to use.
i played this course with 14 clubs a few weeks ago and scored 104
i played it yesterday using andys method and scored 79
