Re: HOW TO SHOOT IN THE LOW 80,s

    Hi Aftford,

after reading this thread a few times it sounds to me a very good way to start getting those scores in.
I'll be off this afternoon to play a round on a course which I have never played. Before I start the round I will be hitting a few balls on the driving range first to get warmed up, this way I will also see which clubs I feel good with and with these few clubs in mind I will play the round and give your idea a try.
I'll let you know how it works out.
    cheers,
    Ian

Re: HOW TO SHOOT IN THE LOW 80,s

        I'll just say "WOW".

I went out on the range and decided I would use, Driver, becuase I was hitting it well, 5I for the fairways, 7I, 9I and my Wedge.
I hit 2 Birdies and 6 Pars, I only had two double bogeys and thats becuase I found the pond.
It was a fantastic days golf. My partner was going wild and asked me what I was doing different. "No comment" came from me.
The first Par 5 we came to, I git a realy good Drive and then pulled out my 5I and my partner laughed and said that I couldn't take the presure, I just smiled. my third shot was on the green and I two putted, Par. He didn't laugh again.
I hit nearly every green in reg. The longer holes I played with Ian's tips in mind, It all just came together.
Thanks a lot to you and Ian for the great advise.
        Cheers,
        Ian

Re: HOW TO SHOOT IN THE LOW 80,s

I felt very relaxed and confident.
It gave me so much confidence that I even started to realy attack the pin
With not having to think about, "oh should I take a 6I or a 5I" just take a 5I and enjoy an easy swing. GREAT.
I noticed towards the end of the round that the heat was getting to me 34°C and very sticky, so I just geared back a bit more and still got some good holes in.
The idea just created for me a lot of confidence. I will be using this way again in next weeks game.

            Cheers

Re: HOW TO SHOOT IN THE LOW 80,s

                Hi Folks.
I need your help. i need somebody to try my system as i originally set it out , 7i, pw, sw and putter.
Everybody has done so well with their own modified versions but is there anybody game enough to give it a go.
I have had lots of private messages from people saying that this system only works if you modify it to suit your strong points.
I would love to prove these people wrong. I know without doubt that a reallly low score is achievable using the above club selection.
I fear that if i cannot prove my point, then this thread and the one i have planned to follow it will not be taken seriously.

                heres hoping. cheers everyone

Re: HOW TO SHOOT IN THE LOW 80,s

                  Good morning Aftford,

the last July week I have managed to get as a holiday and will be playing a few rounds of Golf. I will set aside one of the rounds and use only your original set of 7i, pw, sw and putter.

Just thinking about it seems a good challenge. I think on the course, which I will be playing, there are a couple of long Par 3,s one in particular, which will be interesting to play.

                  Cheers,
                  Ian

I am truly grateful to people like you and slater who have supported this thread and its ideas from the word go.
Its ok to take a bogey on long par 3s , the rest of round will make up for it.
                    cheers Ian

Re: HOW TO SHOOT IN THE LOW 80,s

Has tiger woods been reading our posts?
Did anybody notice how tiger woods only used his driver once on the opening day of the British Open, yet he hit the fairway on evey single hole and finished the day on -5, where as Nick faldo who played in the same group used his driver and 3 wood a lot more than tiger yet still only managed +5.
Joking aside, Tiger found a lot more fairways by playing an iron from the tee becuase he knew that he could not rely on his driver to keep him from hitting into the rough.
food for thought: Faldo out drove Tiger on 15 holes but still ended up 10 shots behind him.

                        Why??????

                        cheers

I can only speak for myself, but I'm getting a bite of THAT cookie!

I think this thread is perhaps the best - or at least the most eye-opening - thread on GTO.

I'm definately going to attempt some kind of variation of this idea.

Since I don't hit my long irons too well, I might bring my 5w, and then perhaps 7i , PW, SW, putter.

                          It's worth the experiment.

Well folks , Tiger did it again.
Apart from the 15th hole he took an iron off every single tee. Why?, becuase even though he is the greatest golfer this planet has ever seen, he knew that to amass the score that he has achieved, he had to find the fairway more than any other player in the competition.Sure he was outdriven by the likes of Faldo, but he kept his ego in check and concentrated on the job in hand. This is the exact phliosophy that i have been trying to put across in this thread.
If it works for tiger , it can work for you .

                              cheers

Re: HOW TO SHOOT IN THE LOW 80,s

Thanks aftford . Thinking of this made me use irons off the tee instead of a driver which i have always used. I had a lesson last week so that helped me. So I used a 3 iron on a par 4, an iron i would never dream of hitting, and it went straight down the middle of the fairway, second shot was a 6 iron which landed about 8 foot from the pin. I actually holed it and couldnt believe the first 2 shots i played, and then i thought of this thread. For the rest of the round i used an iron off the tee and what a difference it made instead of trying to blast it with a driver every time. An iron shot is definetly more accurate and safer. I only went out of bounds once, but it did go straight, as did all my other shots. Thanks.
