With that said, I think you should switch to like a 9.5, cause in the modern golf era, its ALL BOUT CARRY!
Cheers for the advice. I'm gonna start looking at a good trade in for my driver. I think a 10.5ยบ would be ideal. Like you said these days it's all about carry

I'm 58 years old 5'11", 185 lbs. I'm old, but fairly strong, I did a lot of weight lifting in my younger days. I use a Cleveland Launcher 460cc 10.5. I have few 300 yard drives. My norm is 260-275.

I tee the ball high, I use 3 and a quater inch tees. My ball is a full ball above my club head when I tee off.

Based on your height and weight and being athletic I would think you would hit your drives more than 230-235. If you are getting this distance with range balls then I would say you are doing well. If this is the distance you get at the course then I would try a different driver and also have your swing speed checked.

      Happy golfing.

Does everyone find range balls shorter in distance?

Range balls are made to travel less distance. I'm not sure how much less they travel than a ball you would use on the course.

the range balls at my range are old top flites, i drive to the back of the range ,235, but out on the course i reach 300 yard par 4s in one, so yeah range balls much shorter

Re: How far does your best drive carry?

The range is not the place to dial in your distances, really (see the aforementioned posts as for why).

Good for grooving a swing, seeing how to work the ball, that kind of thing.

You learn your distances on the course. Hitting two or three balls and two or three clubs from 150 when it's slow, hitting in a field with a rangefinder, that kind of thing.

I was at the range today, its also in the winter and im carrying my driver about 250, I've never launched the ball this high in my life, and I friggin love it. Im 5'8 140 pounds, lol thats gonna surprise some of you and in total distance I can drive it around 280 (including roll)..In the summer, who knows, maybe ill be able to carry 260 ish. Would you guys say that for a 5'8 140 pounder that carrying the ball 250 (total=280) is decent?
Since I can't spot the ball where it lands, I can only go by the distance left to the pin. Assuming about 20 yards roll for 99% of most people is reasonable, take that off the total.

Re: How far does your best drive carry?

My absolute best ever is 260 yards. (I'm 6'1", 230 lbs) My more typical "good" drive is about 240, and 220 is more typical. That's all with a 3W. With a driver, the distances are no better, but I'm more likely to end up in the next fairway.

So now I'm putting 2 and 2 together. Could it be that the distance markers are placed in proportion to the shorter distance of the balls?

I have to say that this should be widely publicized as it must confuse a lot of people!

Not only are you thinking club x goes distance y but you begin to think that 100 yards looks like this and 200 yards look that...

Good point there James! The ranges I go to all have the same signboard placed in different distances - I never know what is the real distance. That's why I started another post on getting a rangefinder :P

I find that very hard to believe. At least where I practice (2 places), the signs are the correct distance from the middle of the range.

I was thinking this same thing only last week. I'm planning on a trip to the driving range just before dawn one day soon and i'm gonna pace the markers out. The driving range I go to I can hit the 150 marker with a 9 Iron. I'd never take a 9 iron out if i was on the course at that distance. Unless for some reason the way range balls are made they travel further on shorter irons but less with the longer clubs.

At my local range each bay has a diagram showing the distances to each target and for each bay they are different depending on the position relative to the centre. The effect is exaggerated by the fact that the range curves.

It's quite likely that the 150 marker is only 150 from one place, it could be more or less depending on where you are.

Great point. i might pace the markers out from the centre and the end bays just to see what the difference actually is.
