I've played off number one at Gowan Brae Golf and Country Club here in Bathurst, NB, Canada. www.gowanbrae.ca Playing off the black tees is 331 yards. On a couple of occasions I have put my ball within 10 yards of the green. I would estimate on those shots a 300 yard carry with 20 yards roll, however, that was a couple exceptional shots. Most of the time I carry the ball around 270. I am 5' 10" and weigh in at 182 pounds.

I do have a friend that's 6' 4" and weighs around 160. He consistently hits the ball 300 - 310 in the air. The driving range I practiced at with him when we started to play golf had a ditch at 329 yards. When we were done driving our buckets, the owner of the range would go get about half of my friends bucket out of that ditch. That being said, he's a power hitter with incredible flexibility. There's not too many people who can do that consistently.

I'm 6 feet tall, 187lbs, athletic ( apart from the ciggies ). and i have not hit my driver for years ( i don't own one now) , i was awful. I hit my 3 wood 220 with carry ( before the roll ). so in total about 240 yards.

Just got to update my best drive. I've got a new High Bore driver(not HiBore, mines a clone). At the driving range I was hitting the balls about 20 feet over the 30 foot high fence that seconds as the 250 yard marker. Not exactly sure the average since they disappeared into the trees.

Anyway, last night was men's night at our local 9-hole course(Squire Greens). Our team teed off on the 9th hole which is listed as 427 yards to the center of the green from the tee boxes we were playing from. I launched a monster drive that I'll probably never match again. A couple of the boys paced it off for me and from the ball to the center of the green was around 30 yards. That's a drive of 397 yards give or take a couple yards. Chip and putt for birdie. Like I've said before, I've never hit one like that before and I probably never will again, but I did it once in front of 2 other members of my team and 4 from the team waiting to tee off behind us. Now I guess I can rest in peace and play hockey until next golf season. lol

I am 6'1 and 200 lbs not too athletic - my best drives carry about 280 - usually much less. I am still trying to plug the power leaks. I have mostly moved away from driving distance and I am actively working on other areas of my game - mostly from 120 yrds and in.

P.S There are some courses, according to their yardage, i.e., 500 yrds to to hole and then I find my ball and I have much less than 200 yeards to go - and I am not sure where the mistake is but I know FOR SURE - that I did not drive it as far as the numbers suggest.

I used to hit it pretty far off the tee in my youth. I'm just back to golf for the last 4 months (but I've been playing a lot!). I am 5' 10" and weight 198 lbs. I have been athletic all my life.

I don't really know my carry distance (at 50 I can't see that far! , and the range seems a poor place to get your distance), but I have had about 5-10 drives in four months at or over 300 yards. This was measured from the yardage and markers. I went to a place that had a monitor and it clocked my drives at 270-ish. But lately I've "lost" the ability to hit my driver. I'm not getting solid contact because of swing plane issues, so while I am working on that. I am using my 3 wood off the tee. When I hit it solid, the 3 wood goes 225-240 (carry + roll). My biggest issue off the tee is keeping it straight.

My drive is pitiful -- at most 200 yards. I've got a serious power-leak somewhere -- I'm working on it! In fact I get a better result with my 5 wood than my driver. But I figure if I can split a par 5 into 2 fairway shots 1 onto the green and 3-putt, I've got an honourable bogey! A 300 yard drive is over-rated in my opinion and the emphasis on driving is more to do with testosterone than anything else!

I think I'd probably do better with just a 5 iron, PW and a putter and have less to carry around as well.

I'm at least suspicious of fellow golfers distance claims. 300 yards is a very long distance. For instance a buddy of mine claims he hit a 375 yard drive -- yeah downwind, downhill and with some imaginative math he did! One thing for sure, as more and more people start using GPS score cards, reality will bite hard! How is everyone measuring their drive anyway? You can't go out in the driving range and see where your ball landed. No-one brings a measuring tape on the course with them.

Take a look at "average" drives (which of course is both carry and roll) of the BEST DRIVING DISTANCE ON THE PGA TOUR. (Taken from PGA.com)

2 Adam Scott 317.9
3 J.B. Holmes 316.0
4 Camilo Villegas 310.9
5 Charles Warren 310.2

So if you assume 10 to 15% roll and 85% to 90% carry which is generous, even Bubba Watson carrys only 276 to 292 yards.

I guess my drive has improved over the past season. Last time out I hit at least 3/4 of fairways and I was putting it out there consistently 230 yards or so. One went over 260.

While I still think the drive is overrated, there's nothing like being able to pick a target and send the ball down the fairway!

Oh yeah: I'm 5-11 205 lbs and NOT athletic.

6' 1'', 12.5 stone. Average carry with a solid strike is 260yds. I use cobra 440 9 degree driver and cobra irons.

5"8 and best carries 260yds and avg is about 250. if ground hard i can sometimes get it to run to about 285yds but most times its about 270yds with run. i still use my old zing metal wood, have tried a few of the big head drivers but dont hit it in the middle, do hit longer with them but dont want to play out the rough, my games bad enough, lol.

Driving and putting are the strengts of my game. My average drive carries around 285. My longest ever was 312. My clubhead spped is only about 108. You can have the highest clubhead speed in the world, but if you strike the ball with a glancing blow it just won't have the distance your looking for. I play a nice power fade of the tee most of the time. I find it easier to control. When i really want to smash one with some extra roll I'll play a draw. I just wish my ball striking with my irons was up to par so to speak. I'm working really hard on consistent ball striking, I aim to conquer this by the end of this winter, so i can have a strong showing in next years tournaments.

Here's something interesting I noticed today while I watched the golf. It wasn't suprising because I deal with launch testing a lot, but it was really interesting to see that the players were flying their drives to distances between 230 and 260 ...the longes one I saw was 275.

So, for those who fly in that range - take heart in the fact that the pros are not much longer.

So what's going on? On another thread here, we have someone saying they've only been playing for a short while hitting a 5 iron 180 yards!
