Re: How far does your best drive carry?

Consistently, I'm hitting 240, finally figured it all out with the SimpleGolfSwing, with some of my own swing incorporated. My longest, ever, was once in a blue moon - 280. Felt great, but heck - you get lucky sometimes. I'm starting to work out more and with the new swing, everything should go better in the rounds to come.

My average carry is about 265-275 in the summer and about 230 in the winter. I live in Indiana so sometimes that can vary. I am about 6 foot tall and weigh about 200lbs. I am 20 and have an average swing speed of 122 mph. This was measured by a radar gun during a lesson.

Re: How far does your best drive carry?

          i'm 5'9" weigh 66kg's. my best drives carry 225m and roll to 250 - 260m.

though i'll claim a 300m (at stop) only a few weeks back.. but i hit a path.... not to mention that path made my ball clear a creek and get me within 185m of a par5 in the middle of the fairway. some days you get lucky.

Re: How far does your best drive carry?

Hey Big (and not so big) hitters...

I'm not sure if this point was brought up but it is misleading to judge yardage by typical range balls. They are designed to go a shorter distance even when they are brand new and after they have been hit a few hundred times....well the word ball could be an exageration by then.

I always take a few of my own balls (that may have a scuff or two and can be given up) and hit them with the driver during a practice session. Clearly, a well struck regulation ball even with a scuff will travel 30 yards longer than a range ball in my case and straighter too. This gives me a more realistic picture of my distance.

One common practice routine that I think may be the most detrimental to golfers is the urge to hit one driver after another at the range trying to hit the next further than the last. It is only human nature to think....well if I crushed that last one 280 I know I can hit the next one a little further. Unfortunately the law of diminishing returns becomes painfully evident with this routine.

                  Here are the reasons why:

                  1) This is completely out of context with what takes place on the course.
If you hit the same club consecutively (except with the putter) on one hole things probably are not going to well on the course so why practice this on the range...especially with the most agressive swing you can muster? Try to practice like you play.

                  2) The driver swing will fatigue the body quickly and you can also quickly disrupt a natural flow and rythym to your swing by hitting the big stick too often. I have seen many a player hit just a few balls out of a large bucket with an iron and then 70 consecutive drives??? Makes no sense and even if you are able to get into some type of groove doing this...it is totaly out of context with on course play.

                  3) You do not have the same amount of adrenaline working in your system on the range as you do on the course. Ever feel the first tee jitters on the range? Probably not. If you try to swing all out on the range when you do get on the course the adrenaline speeds things up considerably. If you try your full bore swing (that you practiced to perfection in the open field) on a hole with a few sight gags thrown at you (ponds, lakes, trees, mounds, traps, houses etc..)...things might get a little confusing to the mind/ body relationship. This is why the walk from the range to the first tee is often called the longest in golf.....Do not try to hit the ball as far as you can at the range as it is counter productive!!

                  4) When good players practice they always mix full shots with half shots and rarely if ever hit more than a few drives at a time. The pros swing at 80 percent on average and we should also. This method keeps things in balance and realistic as far as consistency. Then when that added kick from your adrenal glands happens on the first tee you might just get it out there 280...and actually find it!!!!

i agree..... i like how you discluded the putter, but i think the 100 yds and in it is good to pratice over and over, all club syou change swing size to get a feel for distance you should practice. but as far a irons and driver you want one distance basically at 80% so i agree there not to hit too many consecutivly....but i think you need to for anything under 100yds.

so if im hitting 230/240 with range balls on a sh**ty field could i presume using a new premium ball i would be averaging 260/270?

Re: How far does your best drive carry?

I just played our staff golf tourney yesterday. The last hole was 306 to the green with a huge water hazzard in front of the elevated green. I hit the bank and stuck, 4 feet in front of the green. I am guessing that was at least a 290 yard carry, but this was not my driver, it was my 3 wood.

looking at todays ryder cup driving the longest did not seem to matter at all and the shorter players seem to do as well if not better than the longest players.

Having a long drive is a matter of pride. I have a long drive and my mid to long irons are pretty good. That being said, my short game and putting aren't all that great and that's what keeps me around a -6 handicap. Like I said before, having a long drive is a matter of pride, but, it sure doesn't make the rest of a guys game any better. I think having a respectable 240-250 yard drive with a good short game makes a good golfer. Of course, if I can keep my long drive and practice enough to get my short game where it should be, that would be better

hitting a consistent 250yard drive pretty much means you've got a swing that can hit all the clubs in your bag and I've noticed that the lengthy par 4 holes are designed so that one could "run one up" on to the green.
